Editorial Review:
Amazon.co.uk Review: The joined-at-the-hip team of director Richard Donner and star Mel Gibson (all the Lethal Weapon movies and Conspiracy Theory) had obvious fun resurrecting the Wild Western comedy television series about a roguish rambler-gambler. In Maverick, Gibson assumes the role of cardsharp Bret Maverick, equally quick with a pair of aces and a pair of guns. Good sport James Garner (who played Maverick on TV) takes another role, as a lawman who travels alongside the hero to a big-money poker game on a riverboat. The real peach in this fruit salad of satire and broad jokes, however, is Jodie Foster, who plays a crafty Southern belle quite adept at poker herself. Sexy, funny, and (from the onscreen evidence) a great kisser, Foster has never been more of a delight. Written by William Goldman (Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid). --Tom Keogh

As at least one of the reviews in favour of this film came from the UK I thought I was in with a chance of being amused. I had thought that a film with James Garner, Jodie Foster and Mel Gibson in the lead roles would be very good but this is really a "ho hum" film. Some of the costumes and scenic shots are great but there is some very poor cutting, particularly in the bank robbery sequence, where it is obvious part of the plot has been cut. The comedy is not very funny and the script is pretty low level. I am very glad I watched this on my own and didn't persuade my husband to watch it with me. It would have been a shame to waste both our time. Don't bother spending your money on this one. I will be donating my copy to freecycle.

This version of Maverick stars Mel Gibson as Bret Maverick, and James Garner, the original Maverick, as Zane Cooper. Add Jodi Foster as AnnaBelle Bransford with a fake southern-belle accent and a Riverboat Poker Game with very high stakes and you have all the elements for a tongue in cheek light hearted comedy. With these pros you will have to laugh.

Well, it is! What I mean is that it's probably the movie containing the most twists ever to be made! Mel Gibson, Jodie Foster and everyone else in the movie is acting like they were telling the story of their lives, and it's all done with such class!
The movie is about this poker-player, Maverick (who is quite fast with the gun, yet a horrible shooter), who wants so badly to get into a poker tournament. But the price just to get in is too much for Maverick to pay, so he sets on this journey to get enough money for the contest, which he does by getting back money from people who owe him. Sounds quite boring, huh? Well that's what I thought too, before I saw it (check the stars for my opinion now). Because on ... Read More:

Maverick” is a ”who-cheats-who?”-comedy about a number of tricksters who converge on a riverboat-gambling-competition in the Wild West. It resembles a 1940-screwball-comedy more than a western, and Jodie Foster reminded this reviewer of Katharine Hepburn at her best.
Compared to Jodie Foster's other movies she is close to overacting several times - like she is on a stage rather than acting in a movie. It is very enjoyable to watch her and a very confident Mel Gibson together, and it seems like they really enjoyed making this movie. Unfortunately the script is much poorer than the classics from the 1930s and 1940s. Despite the two actors' efforts there are just not enough one-liners to keep the story interesting. This makes the ... Read More:

The film is a truly funny magical comic masterpiece. The two male leads offer some great scenes, but the very best performance by far is that of Oscar-winning actress Jodie Foster in the role of Mrs Annabelle Bransford. In this role she really shows that as well as her serious acting skills, she has near-perfect comedic timing. The picture quality on the DVD version is excellent; as is the sound.
