Editorial Review:
: Frank Zappa's first solo album, Hot Rats, is a far-cry from the da-da adventures and audio collages of the original Mothers of Invention. Mostly instrumental, and filled with long jams between Zappa, Jean- Luc Ponty and Ian Underwood, this slickly produced album--one of the first 16-track recordings ever made--is filled with hummable tunes. The opening track, "Peaches en Regalia", is one of Zappa's most enduring songs and the album's only vocal track, "Willie the Pimp", is by Zappa's long-time friend Don Van Vliet, aka Captain Beefheart. -- Andrew Boscardin

Do not buy this..., 12 Dec 2008
By I Stoddart(Scotland) - See all my reviews
Speaking as a long-term FZ fan, I would advise everyone who knows the original genius of Hot Rats NOT to buy this. The remix has substantially altered the original tracks for the worse. Little Umbrellas and the Gumbo Variations have become sterile track overlays, and the zenith of Ian Underwood's marvellous sax solo on the original Gumbo is flatly edited into a modern(?)piece of layered desperation. Even though I am a substantial collector of CDs my advice would be to buy the vinyl rather than this 'empty pantomime'. I can only believe that Frank, if he was responsible for this, was too ill to realise what he was doing. A plea to ... Read More:

Has to be Zappa's most overrated album! Not nearly as good as "Were only in it for the Money", "Absolutely Free" or "Freak out". Hell its probably not even as good as "Burnt weeny Sandwich"!

Frank Zappa the greatest guitarist ever? Probably. Very clever and endlessly inventive. The perfect antidote for all the reality/factor/brother nonsense on the box.Listen to this and then realise how mediocre everything else has become and how we've come to accept it. Buy this album and then spend your thousands ploughing through his huge back catalogue. Enjoy enjoy enjoy.

I love this album, which is the reason I wrote this review. The best track is definately 'gumbo variations' - if you are looking for a fat jam, then look no further! All of these tracks express exceptional musical skill from all of the performers, Frank liked to have the best of the best in his band. And the vocals from Captain Beefheart on 'Willie the Pimp' are great as well. I cannot be bothered to write a bigger review than this, but this album is incredible is all i can say! My favourite Zapaa! Buy this album!

I agree entirely with the other reviewers who state that the original vinyl release outshines this sad mangled mess in all departments. I own both vinyl and CD (the Hot Rats CD came as part of the threesome box set) and when I heard the CD I just could not stand it. Zappa was a fine composer and musician but no great engineer so when he got his hands on some of his own recordings and a digital studio this was the result - All the highs removed and a bland mix with all sorts of junk left in. Thankfully he did not screw up all his work and most of his 60's output (his best in my opinion) remains available on CD in its original released form (or very close to it). Don't get me wrong - I'm a big Zappa fan having seen him live at the Coliseum London ... Read More:
