I hate live albums, they never seem to deliver the goods in terms of studio versions of the content. In this case (along with Live Dead), I shall make an exception. If I had only ten discs from which I could choose to take to a desert island, Roxy would certainly be among them. The musicianship is outstanding, real 'event horizon' stuff. Then you have the humour. Zappa was so exacting that I doubt very much if the content album could have been better recorded in the studio - that's the magic of Zappa and that's the magic of music. Love it to bits!

Desert island zappa!-complex (listen -you need to hear his stuff more than once!)but beautifully melodic spoof jazz /blues rock orchestrations, that will have you laughing and "getting your rocks off" at the same time- the spoken "preambles" at the beginning of the musical sequences should give enough clues to non zappa fans as to what he was all about, although musically ,he was about as serious and talented a composer as you could get. This guy never went for the commercial stuff, and is pretty unique to catagorize in any musical genre as he has tried his hand at just about everything-but he was a fun guy and this album is rich with hilarious lyrics and obvious band in jokes as well as some magnificent orchestrations-his stuff will NEVER be done ... This incarnation of the Mothers(with George Duke,Napoleon Murphy Brock and Ruth Underwood as the core)was one of the best, and this material, mostly from Los Angeles in 1973,is fantastic. The sequence of "Village of the Sun","Echidna's Arf" and "Don't You Ever Wash That Thing?" is truly wonderful-and remember the musicians did it all from memory,no charts.
FZ's humour, not of the cheesy sexist variety so common on his late 1970s albums,is well displayed on "Penguin in Bondage" and "Cheepnis",his contempt for Nixon(this was recorded while touring the US during the Watergate crisis)shows up on "Son of Orange County"-a good reworking of "Oh No"-and there's more musical gymnastics on "Be Bop Tango".
This band is also the band on YCDTOSA Vol.2,recorded ... Read More:

Zappas wonderfully insightful view of life in his times gives us one of the worlds best humourists who can also write excellent music. Compare the hauntingly beautiful themes on Son of Orange County to the pure humour of Cheepnis - just stunning.
This was the first Zappa album I listened to in full, and I now have (virtually) the whole collection. There is always one of his CD's in my CD changer - never be without Franks incredible music and humour.

All I can really say is that the way Echidna's Arf (Of You) and Don't You Ever Wash That Thing? melt into each other is really worth buying this CD for. How a band can be so spectacularly tight while playing such complex, techincal music (Echidna's Arf has so many timing changes in three minutes it's unreal) is just impossible to comprehend. Make sure to be seated for this one for your own safety (if the urge to dance in a manic fashion takes over, then make sure there is a responsible adult present to clear up the mess).
