Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - An ideal introduction
The first volume of this now-notorious series is pretty much a perfect overview of Zappa - at least as far as his live band is concerned (there are no synclavier or orchestral pieces). Not all of the material here rates as classic, but overall the programme is so enjoyable and so varied - skipping easily from era to era in a way that the later volumes couldn't always manage to do - that anyone with an interest in FZ can gauge from their response to this album whether or not it's worth pursuing that interest further.

There are plenty of highlights on this collection. The '71 band's "Once Upon a Time"/"Sofa #1" is a great way to kick the series off, and the segue into the gorgeous heavy metal-style meltdown of "The Mammy Anthem" (from ... Read More:

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Essential Zappa
Volume One of You Can't Do That On Stage Anymore was originally released in 1988, and is certainly one of the most consistent releases in the series (which consists of six volumes). It features a wide cross-section of bands from 1969 to 1984. On the first disc the listener is treated to an excellent version of Sofa from the 1971 band (complete with bizarre mock-metaphysical German lyrics). This track segues into 'The Mammy Anthem' (the opening track of what FZ describes as the 'infamous Palermo riot concert'). This is a rhythm-led instrumental with an exquisite 3-minute guitar solo (replete with liberal but never inappropriate use of the whammy bar) which serves to remind us why aficionados rate Zappa's guitar-playing so highly. This is followed ... Read More:

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Some classic zappa and some dross.
A great introduction to the stage series. Some extremely weird ramblings, some very early cocktail bar musings, some funky rock out stuff and the famous water/beast/truck medley. Conceptual continuity? Here's where it all starts to get strange...
