"Give and Take" sees Mike Stern, known more today as a fusion guitarist, return to a straighter jazz set-up. The carefully chosen line-up of Jack DeJohnette, John Pattitucci, Michael Brecker, Don Alias, David Sanborn and Gil Goldstein forms a strong basis for a collection of Stern's own compositions, interspersed by a few standards. Mike Stern's proficiancy in the creation of inspired jazz tunes of his own is firmly exemplified during both up-beat titles such as "Hook Up" and "One Liners", but also through his melancholic and subdued playing during the ballad "Rooms".
