 Rating: - This works....The history of strings and jazz is not always a happy one and often produces something like easy listening. Of all the attempts that I've heard this is one of the most successful. I think that it actually comes across as the most idiomatic. Roach tends to use the string quartet as a fifth member of the jazz quartet to very good effect. There is nothing soft centred about this music. I would disagree with the view that the most successful track is the one without the jazz quartet I would recommend the opening track "Bird Says" with its bebop quotes. |
