 Rating: - Seminal early sixties Jazz masterpieceThis is one of those hynotic early sixties Blue Note sessions that must surely go down as one of Jazz's masterpieces. This was recorded as a dedication to Silver's Japanese fans and the reception his band received whilst on tour there. We start with the kicking,"Too much Sake." It's Silver's agility and sense of tempo, omnipresent on all his recordings that mark his music out. This track is another classic example. Then we come to, "Sayonara Blues," for me one of the greatest pieces of music in Jazz. Witness the way Silver builds the tempo from a single starting note, his relentless control of the tempo through two admirable solos from Mitchell and Cook and then his own beautiful arching solo that breaks through the rhythm of ... Relatively unknown by the record-buying general public, but loved by many who 'know about jazz' (Gilles Peterson and 4Hero are both major fans), the man should rightfully be up there with Davis and Coltrane. Better even than the more popular 'Songs for my father' this album would fit in any decent record collection, no matter what your taste. If you can get hold of it, it sounds even better on vinyl! Rating: - Absolutely magical.Although recognised by many as a giant in the Jazz world, Silver has never had the recognition afforded to many of his contempories. This album shows exactly why he should be elevated to the status of all time great. Sayonara Blues is an epic that stands as one of the finest pieces of music of the 20th Century, whilst the rest of the album takes in everything that you can ask for in a timeless jazz album.
