Editorial Review:

Amazon.co.uk Review:
Ronny Jordan emerged from the British club jazz explosion of the 1990s seemingly determined to salvage the jazz guitar from middle class cocktail bars and make it hip again. He had a world-wide hit with his jazz-funk cover of "So What" and with The Quiet Revolution had two acid jazz compilation favourites released: "Season For Change", with Gangstarr's lead rapper Guru, and "The Jackal" featuring poetess Dana Bryant. The latter being surprisingly disconcerting for a dance hit: a haunting story of a mysterious ghetto figure it aims at the head as well as the feet. Throughout the album Jordan's playing is accomplished rather than amazing and is usually to be found propelling amiable jazz-funk tunes. His playing is neat and compact, and if it lacks a little emotional depth it is attractive nonetheless. So maybe the album title is rather misleading, a more accurate one would have been "gentle reform", but then that doesn't quite have the same ring to it. Still, it is well worth your vote. --Phil Brett

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Starts off with a bang
Mr Jordan's second venture and it is a lot more funky than his first album (The antidote). The first track 'Season for change' sets high expectations of the album. The next few tracks certainly excite and then comes the well known `The Jackal'. After that the album seems to trail off a touch. I became a big fan of Ronny Jordan after his first album and this one is very good. I have even had the pleasure of seeing him live. This album gets four stars because it starts off amazingly well and then looses its edge towards the end.

Rating: 2 out of 5 stars - Pshaw!
I bought this partly because I'm an amateur guitarist who's studying jazz and partly because 'The Jackal' turned up in a classic scene from the TV series 'The West Wing', of which I'm a bit of a fan. It seems to me that Ronny Jordan is one of that all-too-common species of guitarist who probably can play his ass off, but who for obscure reasons of his own is determined not to - cf. the later Wes Montgomery, pretty much all of George Benson, etc. Track after track of bland hip-hop glides by with polite noodling from Mr. Jordan, with the occasional bop cliche just to reassure us that he has the chops, but the album as a whole is not my idea of real music. Exception: 'The Jackal' is a great party number, but because of the vocals, not because ... Read More:

Rating: 2 out of 5 stars - A predicable series of songs...he can do better!
Ronny seems to be going through the motions on this offering. His creative juices are well below what he's cable of (check out "Antidote"). "Season for a change" is a perky opener but it fades fast into banality until briefly lifted again with the very catchy "Come with me". Overall, a major disappointment from someone so talented. Still, he gets 2 stars for being so different from the commercial jazz pack.

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - Promising but...
Such a mixed bag!!!It starts with a stonking trip hop jazz featuring Guru Keith on vocals which is absolutely incredible. But apart from The Jackal, a smooth gangster number, the rest of the album is mere lift music or something to wander round the January sales to. Such potential, such a waste.
