Amazon.co.uk Review: Set up by Nirvana producer Butch Vig, featuring two veteran session musicians from Madison, Wisconsin and singer Shirley Manson of no-hit-wonder 1980s Scottish band Goodbye Mr Mackenzie, Garbage surprised themselves as much as anyone else when they hit payout with their debut album. Their success made sense, though. Although it's guitar rock, Garbage were plugged into state-of-the-art studio software, generating a cybergoth sound as black, flexible and synthetic as PVC, capable of odd morphing effects to match the plunging mood swings of tracks like "Vow". In the over-cheery mid-1990s, dominated by Britpop and boy bands, songs like "I'm Only Happy When It Rains" were a welcome antidote, while Shirley Manson emerged as the most potent, self-aware and no-nonsense rock frontwoman since Chrissie Hynde, flaunting the darker side of her psyche with the same menacing intent as she flaunted a pink feather boa onstage. --David Stubbs
From Amazon.com: Cool, calculating, and Euro-trashy in the grand tradition of Roxy Music and the Eurythmics. --Jeff Bateman

When i saw this album my friend recommended it; i wasnt sure. After all, it had the Nirvana connection and i expected the same rubbish rehashed tunes Cobain traded on. I was amazed at the depth and variation of the tracks Vig and co created. Queer plodded along but punched everything in its way, then Only Happy When It Rains comes along, mixing morbid Goth with punk rock and working.
Vow and Stupid Girl climbed the charts and the album was played to death. Catching them at Brixton Acedemy was even better as the live material was fantastic. For a producer and two session musicians they backed Shirley Manson like seasoned professionals.
Garbage 2.0 wasnt bad, but the crying shame is that they have never equalled ... Read More:

i remember hearing about this band many years ago and laughing at them purely because they were called garbage and had a song called queer!!
a few years passed and then i bumped into the band again on a tv show and i actually heard them this time and thought myself rather silly for writing them off!!! they are great!!!
this is the sound of a rock band with a great eye for pop melodies. almost all the songs have got some fantastic guitar work in them and yet the vocals are so melodic...and sultry...almost sleazy..but in a good way!
for me the choice songs are queer, vixen, only happy when it rains and the haunting milk.
overall a great album...well worth checking out if you want something with a little bite but then kisses ... Read More:

It happens rarely that you like every song on an album; there's always one or two that you would skip over. However, this is one of those albums where you want to listen to almost every song. Garbage are great here, they are really angst ridden rock (but not in the same whiney way as Alanis or Avril Lavigne so have no fear). For those of you who like quiet angst, Milk is a refreshing break from the heavy anthems and guitars of the other songs. Although it is lighter, it is in keeping with the general theme of the rest of the album and is quite dark.
Their best album is Version 2.0 which is an absolute classic - it is another album where every song is one which you will want to hear.
I think this first album and Version 2.0 ... Read More:

Now I must admit that I never truly began to catch onto Garbage until they released Why Do You Love Me. And so I decided to buy their other albums before Bleed Like Me. This was the first I bought and it didn't disappoint. Shortly after buying Version 2.0, beautifulgarbage and Bleed Like Me, I've decided that this is their best album mainly because of how consistently great it is. OK there is a couple of dull tracks (ie A Heaven is Wide and Stroke of Luck) but the remaining 10 tracks are quite simply fantastic. I think my fave out of the whole lot might be Vow but to go for a darker choice, it would have to be Milk. However, all the songs are dark in their own right and amazingly don't sound 10 years old at all. One of the best albums of the 90s, ... Read More:

If you like anything by Garbage you should hear their early work- this CD is their early work and this particular version even has a couple more tracks than usual.
Garbage's style has been pretty consistent throughout their career varying from aggression to depression with the focus on great music and a cool style.
