Editorial Review:
Amazon.co.uk Review: Such is the popularity of Greek synthesiser solo artist and film composer Vangelis, that 1996 saw the release of not one, but two anthologies of his music, the other being Portrait: So Long Ago, So Clear. This particular set draws its 15 tracks from four albums representative of the composer's hugely successful career from his first hit album through to the 1990s. Starting in 1975 with Heaven and Hell, The Gift features Vangelis' first collaboration with Jon Anderson, the transcendent ballad "So Long Ago, So Clear", and also adds an excerpt from the lengthy original "Heaven and Hell Part II". Music from Albedo 0.39 (1976) was featured extensively in the TV series Cosmos, and The Gift presents the theme from the series, plus the outstanding tracks "Pulstar" and "Alpha". By 1988 and the release of Direct Vangelis was exploring the world of sampling, with the operatic vocals on "Glorianna (Hymn A La Femme)" pointing towards his 90s releases El Greco and Voices. Finally, "Shine for Me" and the title track from Page of Life (1991) the fourth collaboration between Jon and Vangelis, complete the connection to the 70s, neatly bringing this diverse collection of memorably melodic electronic music full-circle. --Gary S. Iv'e owned the CD Vangelis "Themes" for some while now, and i rate it very highly. What a disappointment this CD, the best of vangelis was. Nothing of the quality and originality of Vangelis of the 80's and 90's (listen to "Themes" and compare). All i heard was re-hashing of old material from this period, and third rate at that. I wondered why it sold so cheap!? now i know.. And being a musician and composer, i do know what i'm talking about.

You better believe it, a best of/come compilation CD without the Chariots of fire tune. Don't get me wrong I think Vangelis is great and only misses the target every now and then. But chariots has been played to overkill. When it appears on other best of Vangelis type CD's I normally skip it.
Gift... is an excellent bunch of tunes. A kind of young persons guide to the true genius of Vangelis. It also has Mr Jon Anderson singing like a free Canary on the wing, on the glorious track 8. So Long Ago So Clear and sadly in my view it has been. I have loved Vangelis since a teenager from the time of Heaven and Hell album. It was a mind blowing experience, as things were so fresh back then. This CD has also the fantastic 12 o'clock, track ... Read More:
