Editorial Review:
Amazon.co.uk Review: People may argue whether or not this compilation qualifies as the best of Clannad, but few would argue that it showcases the Irish group's striking diversity. It includes some of Clannad's best-known selections, including pop-single cameos by Bruce Hornsby ("Something to Believe In")and Bono of U2 ("In a Lifetime"), plus the group's career-propelling "Theme From Harry's Game". The Ultimate Collection's most attractive feature, however, is its sampling of Clannad's varied approach to Celtic styles, performed at times with an ethereal, traditional delicacy (the Enya collaborations "Na Buachailli Alainn", "Green Fields of Gaothdobhar" and Mhorag's Na Horo Gheallaidh"), and at other times with beguiling hints of contemporary influences. --Terry Wood

If you only ever buy one Clannad CD, then this should be it. It contains most of their mainstream hits, the highlights of their screen work, and the choicest cuts from their early, traditional albums, including a couple of tracks that are now almost unobtainable elsewhere. The musicianship is superb, the arrangements faultless, and the songwriting flawless. And to top it all, you have Maire (a.k.a. Moya) Brennan's angelic soprano, so heart-stoppingly beautiful that it sends shivers up my spine every time I hear it - easily the most beautiful voice I have ever heard. Why stop at one album? Buy the lot!

I really love this CD the music just takes my breath away sometimes, some of the tracks i dont really care for but i will still listen to them as it would spoil the CD to stop and not listen to them, it so relaxing sometimes after a hard day just to put this on my CD player or pc and that s all i need to relax and take the strain of the day away.

There are some real gems on this album, such as "Theme from Harry's Game", which still sends the proverbial shivers down my spine, and "In a Lifetime" featuring Bono from U2. However, there are also tracks like "New Grange" and "Closer to Your Heart" that are pretty dull. And one of Clannad's best songs, "Coinleach Ghlas An Fhomair", is not on this album. In short, I would say that the tracks in English - except for "In a Lifetime" - are nowhere near as good as those in Irish, of which thankfully there are several.
