Huey "Piano" Smith was the head of New Orleans/Mississippi based Ace records' house band (the Clowns). As such he backed Frankie Ford on the classic "Sea Cruise". He did however put out a number of records under his own name, with a variety of singers clowning away (including Bobby Marchan), which are collected here.

I came across him after picking up Mark Lemarr's "Ace is wild" compilation (a bit of a stab in the dark, as I didn't then know that Lemarr was not only a "fifties throwback", but a very knowledgeable one) and was keen to hear more.

Smith and the Clowns made great rock'n'roll with a similar songwriting style to The Coasters, though what the Clowns may lack in terms of material compared to the Leiber & ... Read More:
