Editorial Review:

From Amazon.com:
There has never been a better showcase for improvisational rock than this 1971 concert recording, and few (if any) live rock albums are in its rank. With only two studio albums (and plenty of touring) under their belt, the Georgia sextet tore into the Fillmore East with road-tested buoyancy. Titanic guitarist Duane Allman was at the peak of his powers, pushing his foil, Dickey Betts, to unsurpassed peaks. Vocalist-keyboardist Gregg Allman would have been a star in any other setting; here he's merely one more component in a brilliant ensemble. Duane Allman died shortly after At Fillmore East shipped, and the Brothers haven't scaled such heights since. But, then, neither has anyone else. --Steven Stolder

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - blue and ramblin' rock
First of all, since I'm primarily a jazz (and only partly blues) fan,
I'm probably not the most relieble judge for all the rock fans that praise this album (that's why I gave it one more star than I personally would).
But, at the time I was already infected by the jazz bug, I accidentally stumbled upon the first three songs from this album on a blues show on a Croatian radio station...

I liked "Statesboro Blues", "Done Somebody Wrong" (an Elmore James song) and "Stormy Monday (Blues)" (yes, the T-Bone Walker song) then and I like these songs now; they're definitely rock, but also they have a fine blues feeling, among the best rock-blues performances I've heard (according to my tastes).

But, the rest ... Read More:

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Rock on for ever Skydog & Co!
Do you like rock? Blues? As far as live albums go, this is the best you'll ever find. I've been listening to the original version of this one since 1973 (yes-for 30 years) and it still has the same incredible power, laced with that hard to define "feeling the blues" with an almost mystical quality that resulted from the talent and drive of these guys. From the power-house double-drumming and "feel the earth move" bass of Oakley, topped with the high-flying precision solos from Betts, and the incredible "whip" of Duane's medicine bottle slide, sprinkled with Gregg's southern gravel- well, you have it all. The Allman Brothers Band were always amazing, but they struck a very special high at Fillmore East, 1971.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Original and best!
This is one of the truly great live albums from the rock era, in my opinion only Live Dead comes anywhere near it; and as far as the 'Southern rock' idiom is concerned it is quite simply unsurpassed. There are so many things about their sound which are unique, especially from the contemporary perspective where we have a dearth of artists who are raised on the genuine blues. This stuff really bites. Duane Allman was one of the true greats of the electric blues guitar, he seems literally to fry the air on occasions; and his interplay with the more countryfied Dicky Betts is awesome, just plain spooky at times. It doesn't stop there either. They had a great rhythm section with the two drummers giving the band enormous power and flexibility ... Read More:

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Unbeatable.
Purely and simply the finest live album ever recorded by the greatest improvisational rock band of all time.

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - I resold my copy...
I bought this album after hearing that it was rated as a truly great live album and because I'd heard the Frank Zappa version of 'Whipping Post' and wanted to check out the original. I can't say that I was that enamoured by this offering, but what they do (blues / boogie / Southern swamp rock) they do well. Brother Duane's slide and lead playing is excellent, although some of the songs are weak and predictably structured (12 bar blues). My favourite track is the instrumental 'In Memory of Elizabeth Reed' which I think best highlights the band's collective capabilities. As for the 22 minute long version of 'Whipping Post' well I'm afraid try as I might I never managed to sit through the whole track. If this is your bag then enjoy it, but I ... Read More:
