Editorial Review: Amazon.co.uk Review: Given the diligent classicism of Ian Broudie's pop template--its borrowings from and canonisation of past "greats"--it's unsurprising how few risks he took. The "band" was conceived initially as a solo, studio project, and those early tracks--with their handmade, all-my-own-work feel--reveal him as an unwitting contemporary of The Magnetic Fields' Stephin Merritt, another practitioner of "music-box pop". However, as Broudie's vision opened up to accommodate other players, and the arrangements became looser, the songs lost a little of their fragility, became noticeably more joyous and celebratory. Complete with the obligatory bonus tracks (a previously-unreleased cover version of the 60s hit "You Showed Me" and two new songs, "What You Say" and "Brain Drain"), this compilation makes for an engaging journey, through which the only common factors are Broudie's unerring instinct for a good tune, and that plaintive sob of a voice.  Rating:  - Great timeless songsThe Lightening Seeds were part of the Brit Pop phonomemom during the 90s and one of many such bands to seemingly fall by the way side when the Brit Pop phase died down. Brit Pop did create some great bands, some of which are still going strong today (Oasis of course) as well as many very forgetable ones! The Lightening Seeds however may not be around at the moment, but their songs are and will still be played on radio stations for years to come. You only have to listen to this album to find out why. I'm not a huge fan of the band in the sense of knowing their background, why they split, if they're likely to get back together and so on. However I do know most of the songs on this album and as long as you like this type of music, you will ... Read More: Rating: - Please, something new!I miss the Lightning Seeds and this cd just reminds me why. Their albums were always likeable although the filler tracks were forgettable, but the singles were always far better than most other indie pop before or since. Most of these really hit the bullseye and evn the near misses are good for the car! I wish they'd come up with something new. Rating: - pure and simplethis is an album which can really get a party or even a concert venue going (i have seen em twice) and i can still listen to this album which i enjoy very much! has all the songs that one would expect and they all sound fantastic! put it on your cd player, enjoy and soon enough you'll be singing along! Rating: - Awesome collectionThe Lightning Seeds have been around awile now so naturally their best of would feature some great songs. But this collection is simply outstanding. Theres bearly a song that I don't like (save Say What You Say)and its brilliant to chill out to especially after a hard days work,while driving anytime. The best song on the album is Pure, a piece of excellence from when the trumpet first comes in to the final chord. Three Lions is also a great song, and everyone will remember it for the heartbreak (footie fans) of '96. Other great songs include Marvellous, Life of Riley and Sugar Coated Ice Burg amoung many others. If you like music thats not to high tempo but catchy and a good listen then you must hear this album - there is simply no excuse not ... From the moment you start it off, Go trough songs such as Life of Riley, Lucky You and Pure you realise you are really into the album. Then Ready or Not plays, say no more really. To finish with the all-time classic Three Lions '96 really shows what has been missing in the music industry today. The only downpoints, if any, is Brian Drain & the overlong intro of Marvellous. That said there really isn't any sort of downfall on this album. If you buy one Lightning Seeds album buy this one. Another noticeable inclusion is a re-working of Waiting For Today To Happen which is really great. |
