Editorial Review:

Amazon.co.uk Review:
In this futuristic tale, our world has been taken over by the machines we created, but dissenters are bent on undermining the system that has ascended. It's an oft-told tale, and the quartet's ultrafast staccato guitar assaults are familiar, but there are some surprises in evidence on Obsolete. Burton C. Bell no longer just bellows. DJ Zodak scratches up the crunching "Edgecrusher". Drummer Raymond Herrera provides some engaging organic drum & bass mimicry on "Freedom or Fire". And the last two cuts feature a 12-piece string section. Given the aggressive atmosphere of what's come before, it's refreshing that the nihilistic finale consists of simple, mournful vocals; synth noises; and beautifully elegiac strings. --Bryan Reesman

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - GREAT FOLLOW UP AFTER DEMANUFACTURE
After Fear Factorys best album 'demanufacture', it would be hard for the band to release an album as classic as 'demanufacture. This album is not as good although it is only slightly worse which in turn makes this a great album. The album has a consistently good songs. The guitars sound awesomely menacing and driving and the drumming is rapid fire and precise. The vocals are good with Burton C.Bell screaming and growling along with some excellent melodic choruses. The melodic choruses fit in perfectly in track three 'smasher/devourer' and also in 'shock' 'descent' and 'freedom of fire' A good element to Fear Factory is the keyboard which adds a great dark atmosphere to the songs. It gives them an extra edge and it works really well. The turntable ... Read More:

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Obsolete
I've had this album since it came out in 1998, its was one of my first ever heavy records along with Machine Heads' Burning Red. These were the bands my heavy roots were raised upon so they still hold a special place in me somewhere, aww. I thought I'd review Obsolete because it was my favourite record for quite a while and is, in my opinion the pinnacle of Fear Factory and indeed Machine Head's back catalogue. You see I've pissed off a few people right there because Demanufacture is heralded as FF's best, and one of the best heavy albums of the 1990s. I have always thought Obsolete was much better; first of all the production on this album is absolutely awesome; clear, heavy and has an incredible amount of depth. Secondly the songwriting on this ... Read More:

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - Hmm, i think i've heard this before
Every time i listen to a fear factory album, i feel i have heard it before, i think for a little while and then realise, it was their previous album.

Fear factory are the masters of writing a good tune, and then releasing it about 5 times, at different speeds with different words.

However Fear factory do have some good tunes, for example edgecrusher, that'll get your blood pumping.

I used to be a huge fan but then they became too repetative, they lack the ability to create a huge song, some of there better ones are on this album, such as edgecrusher.

My biggest problem is the singer, he shouldn't be in a metal band.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Fear Factory deliver yet another brilliant album
Following on from 'Demanufacture' was never going to be easy. In the end, 'Obsolete' doesn't reach the heights of its predecessor, but still it remains an essential metal album. In fact, any criticisms of the album arise only when compared to 'Demanufacture'.

With each consequent album, Fear Factory gradually took a more commercial approach. The production is sharper, with less of an emphasis on the pulverising drumming and the riffs now have more of a staccato bounce to them. The song structures appear now to take a more traditional rock approach, and there are more samples, keyboards and sung sections. On the whole, this does lose a bit of the dark atmosphere of the last album, but makes for a more instantly accessible album.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - impressive
having bought the industrial metal masterpiece that is Demanufacture, i was eager to hear some more FF material as they seemed the only band capable of creating a truly intense atmosphere, with a majestic blend of rapid, precise drumming, crunching guitars, and grinding electronics, not to mention the growling bass in the background. This album has a lot to offer in that it is a more mature and rounded sound than that of Demanfacture.Opening with the now legendary 'Shock', listeners know they are in for a treat. And when the next track 'Edgecrusher' bellows its futursitc sound, you wonder whether the album can get any better.Sadly not. Whilst all the other tracks are good, espcially 'Messiah', the intensity ofund in the Demanufacture is lost.
