Editorial Review:
Amazon.co.uk Review: Supralingua, literally meaning "beyond the spoken word, beyond language" is another stunning percussion album from former Grateful Dead drummer Mickey Hart and the loose grouping of international collaborators that is Planet Drum. Including the world-famous Zakir Hussein, Sikiru Adepoju and Graceland bassist Bakithi Kumalo, a similar band was responsible for Mickey Hart's fabulous earlier releases, On The Edge and Planet Drum which are a must for any fan of drumming/world music. On Supralingua, Hart introduces two new elements. The first is his pioneering use of MIDI technology to sample and blend live percussion sounds from across the world into the album--Hart directs the "endangered music" project at the Smithsonian in the US, through which he has access to a colossal range of such material. The other novelty is Hart's use of vocals on this album. Drawing from the ethnically diverse pool of local San Francisco talent, this adds a well-judged new dimension to the music. With few actual words sung, and none in English, they only add to the shifting weave of rhythms on display. This is an album of truly organic percussion music, dominated by magical and psychedelic grooves that are at the same time darkly forbidding, sexy and transformative. From the disturbing opening "Angola", featuring samples of the ritual singing of the Tibetan Gyoto Monks, to "Yabu's" insistent rhythms and the inspired dreaminess of "Endless River", this extraordinarily powerful album is unmissable. --James Swift
