Editorial Review:
Amazon.co.uk Review: Their most willfully oblique and bizarre release, Wowee Zowee sees Pavement eschewing the noisy pop aesthetic of Slanted And Enchanted and straightforward songs of Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain to delve deeper into the warped psyche of their deliciously odd music. Songs like "Rattled By The Rush" are still as lovely as always, with Steve Malkmus's melodious vocals coasting over lo-fi guitar fuzz; but elsewhere, the music flits from folk to music-hall twee to country with disorientating abandon. It's a fragmented and highly cryptic ride; and in typically perverse Pavement fashion, it is only after repeated listens that the kaleidoscope of musical styles start to slot into place. Those who persevere, however, will find their efforts richly rewarded. --Amber Cowan

I've only just bought this issue and regret that I waited so long. The first disc which features the album and the EPs is consistently excellent, but the second disc, which I haven't investigated much yet, does not seem to be of the same standard as in the Crooked Rain set. The comparison by a reviewer here with the "white album" is justified. This album is notable for its variety and for consistent excellence. I've had the album before but have only now realized how consistently good it is. I would say it is their best album since the Westing by Musket collection. If you like Pavement this is essential.

A journo might say this is pavement's 'White Album'. The point is that Pavement never felt the need for pastiche or imitation; it's just a load of songs; some of which seem pretty bad some of the time and excellent the next day e.g. fight this generation, black out, rattled by the rush, father to a sister of thought....
it's just unique and really fun.
if you have no sense of humour or think stereo is pavement's best song, you might not like it...
this edition includes give it a day, painted soldiers and loads of other cool songs.
that's why its fivestar!

Good grief! Fifty songs for the price of a normal album? Surely not. Wait. Yes. Fifty songs for the price of... a normal album. How odd!
Disk one is the actual album plus some rare tracks and disk two is more rare tracks and radio recordings. 'Wowee Zowee' takes Pavement's knack of writing the simplest song but turning it into something very special with minimal effects and technological smoothing (which is something that has ruined lesser bands). Pavement are (were) defiantly lo-fi and they sound all the better for it. Minimalist yet cryptic lyrics thrown out over drawn out, hazy guitars make this band brilliant at the best of times but this is just such a strong album that it's difficult to come to terms with. And yes, ... Read More:

Ok, this is a very wierd album, i mean pavement are inherently wierd, but this pushes it. Their 'pop' song structures and melodies employed in earlier (better?) releases, totally dissapear (minus a few songs) and seem to be replaced with mad noise and sort of, -not quite hardcore- but totally bizzare punk! but dont be fooled, its amazing. listening to this record feels uncomfortable, sort of like a nervous breakdown, its very depressing in places as well. We dance is a really sad song, top class pavement, as is grounded and grave architecture.Rattled by the rush and other more rocking songs sound perfect on this reissue, but its 18 tracks which is very long, and some seem to just merge into the next. I'd say get the reissue, because the artwork ... Read More:
