Simply one of the best hard rock lp's ever made. Recorded during the band's prime era, 1968. Starts off with "Ramblin' Rose" and their sole hit "Kick Out The Jams", as the MC 5's members rips through, what proves to be a most memorable blistering live set. Who could turn away from "Motor City Is Burning" and their astounding cover of Sun Ra's "Starship"? Talk about a trend setting album. It's safe to assume that without the MC 5, there probably would never have been Motorhead, Sex Pistols, Monster Magnet, the Melvins, Soundgarden.....you get the point. Comes with a full-color two-sided six-page fold-out that includes some nifty band photos and memorabilia. Definitely recommended.

So this is supposed to be the first punk record. I don't want to deny its influence or its legacy, but let me start by saying that I'm not really feeling it. I just don't think the quality of song writing is there. The grooves are clumsy, even while the band is tight and the whole thing reminds me of seeing an unsigned band - one that's been heavily influenced by Oasis.
There's plenty of attitude, and the recording captures that very well. You get a real sense of revolution being in the air, and a real gang mentality emanating from the band. Unfortunately the recording lacks clarity. The guitars are too loud, while the bass and drums are almost completely buried. The fact that this was recorded in 1968 is no excuse - just listen ... I heard a single track from this album on a mojo sampler and was intrigued enough to purchase. It has odd strained vocal and the odd bum note. However along with UFO live, this is the best live album I have heard. Subtle it is not, it is raw sledgehammer old school rock. Brilliant.

If it wasn't for this band we wouldn't have Motorhead , The Damned and many other bands who have cited MC5 as influences. Their attitude to music and Life still shines through. I'm not saying this album is perfect because it's not, but in 1969 it must've been a breath of fresh air. Their influence will live forever. Thank goodness for musicians that break down the barriers and kick the rest of them up the behind and this is exactly what this did !! Highpoints are the title track obviously, Ramblin Rose and Motor City Is Burning. Go on buy yourself some history, and KOTJMF !

The MC5's live debut is one of those albums that stays in the 'hall of fame' because it goes against the grain of its time. The rallying cries that crop up at the start and between songs draw attention to this. The first four tracks maintain a white-hot pace, sizzling, volcanic, dirty and angry. This is rock and roll as the man downstairs originally conceived. No wonder Blue Oyster Cult appropriated 'Kick Out The Jams' for their live act. MC5 sound, in the first half, like the culmination of the rise of the many obscure US garage bands of the 1960s.
Some objectivity is needed when assessing the album as a whole, though. 'Borderline' is OK, but not as good as the earlier tracks, while the bluesier feel of 'Motor City Is Burning' isn't ... Read More:
