Looking at the other reviews opinion is clearly divided on the subject of this album. Fair enough. As far as I'm concerned this is is as far away from the magnificence of their first, and their most recent, albums as you can get. Grunge was coming and Maiden, along with a lot of metal bands, had totally lost their way. It's an album with few, if any, redeeming qualities. They were out of ideas. It's derivative, and not even good at being that. It's also one of Bruce's worst vocal performances as he tries a slightly more throaty style which just doesn't work for me at all. Public Enema Number One, Hooks In You and Bring Your Daughter are just embarrassing.
And if you want to know what the band thinks of it, try to find out when they last ... Read More:

This is suprisingly underrated. In my opinion this album is awesome and goes along with all the other classic Iron Maiden albums. There are some really awesome maiden songs here Holy Smokes & Public Enema Number One are my favourites out of this album. I think only not too keane on Mother Russia it starts off cool and ends cool but a little repetitive (sorry to say). Iron Maiden after the departure of the guitarist Adrian Smith went onto more Rock N' Roll style which for isnt a bad thing it works for me so i think this album is awesome. Maybe not the best place to start with Iron Maiden but a very good buy for Maiden fans should i really be mentioning that?. New Iron Maiden fans start with The Number Of The Beast. UP THE IRONS!!!!!!!

When Iron Maiden released this, it was clear they were out of ideas "bring your daughter to the slaughter" that says it all really. If you are looking to get into Iron Maiden, start at the start and end at Seventh Son of a Seventh Son.

Hooray a return to a more direct, solid, heavy rock Maiden of old. This is better than SIT and SSOASS IMO. All the songs are individual gems the only thing that stops it getting 5 stars is the production which at times is worse than SIT. I think Martin Birch's heart wasn't in it for some reason. Their last decent album I'm afraid (and yes that includes AMOLAD)
And who butchered the original album cover??

i am bloody fed up of hearing bad reviews on this album, simply because its not maidens best of their best! man,its still a class album i believe, and there isnt a song on the album that ive ever wanted to skip. great bands who have been so consistantly good, always get slated when an album fails to impress as much. i believe its very sad that great maiden songs like bring ya daughter to the slaughter, and holy smoke are almost totally forgotten, cos they still rock to high heaven.i appreciate the fact that maiden,on this album wanted to return to the basics, and ditch the synths, and also have stand-out guitar sound.this album was recorded almost live, with little or no overdubbs...is this so bad? i dont think so buddy. so lets all dig this album out ...
