Editorial Review:
From Amazon.com: Prior to a lot of travel and his eventual settling in England, Ayub Ogada was a member of the Luo tribe from a wedge of northern Kenya pinched between Uganda and Tanzania. Ogada's music is based on repetitious patterns plucked on the nyatiti, a stringed instrument reminiscent of the lyre. On En Mana Kuoyo (meaning "just sand"), he sings mellifluous, almost hypnotic, and yet ultimately lackadaisical melodies concerning home, his instrument, the weather, and injustice. By way of attempting a subtle fusion of African and European (not to mention urban and rural) styles, Ogada is accompanied by a small ensemble that adds surprisingly little to almost too-pretty songs more alike than not. --Richard Gehr

It's amazing to think this album is 14 years old but I guess African music is timeless. This album is for those who love grassroots African music, played using nothing but simple instruments, tradition and passion. Kenyan music isn't what most people think of when listening to African music. With the likes of Salif Keita, Baaba Maal and Ali Farke Toure flying the flag for Mali and Senegal, it's hardly surprising, but Oyub Ogada really does put Kenya on the music map with this album. Many will recognise the haunting Kothbiro from The Constant Gardner film, but the album is much more than this one song. Buy the CD, sit back, relax and be transported to the heart of rural western Kenya.

This really takes you through a mental journey through deserts, jungles and wilderness. you really imagine yourself in the middle of Africa exploring sights and sounds far far away from London or any othe big city. It also has the beautiful song 'Kothbiko' which was used in "Constant Gardner" Enjoy!

This is a beautiful album, at times you think that you might be listening to a whole orchestra, yet it is just him with his traditional lyre-like tool. He injects emotion and honesty into those rhythms with his powerful yet humbling tone.
