Editorial Review:
Amazon.co.uk Review: As it says on the cover, this set offers the chance to "Relax ..." with three hours and 20 minutes of classical tranquillity. Produced by Classic FM, this anthology is very much like listening to the radio station, but with all the adverts and other talk blissfully removed. Here are the famously beautiful bits of early music: Pachelbel's Canon, Allegri's Miserere Mei, and a shortened version of Vivaldi's Nulla in Mundo Pax Sincera (though a better way to explore this latter piece is Maria Zadori's recital of Vivaldi). Elsewhere, the album mixes famous adagios culled from longer works--Rachmaninov's Second Piano Concerto, Rodrigo's Concierto de Aranjuez, Mahler's Fifth Symphony and Kachaturian's Spartacus--with shorter complete selections. The Britten Sinfonia offer two of Vaughan Willams's finest pieces, The Lark Ascending and the Tallis Fantasia, while such miniature gems as Barber's Adagio for Strings, Fauré's Pavane and the Albinoni/Giazotto Adagio scarcely require an introduction. These are all major recordings from the Conifer, ASV and Arte Nova labels, and offer fine sound quality and performances from such orchestras as the Philharmonia, the City of London Sinfonia, and the Royal Philharmonic. Though packaging excerpts of classical music in easily digestible chunks of mood music is inevitably contrary to the composers' intentions, the music has been carefully sequenced to produce three seamlessly flowing programmes, with many of the works being among the most popular and frequently requested on Classic FM. Listeners in search of comparable pleasures with greater authenticity might prefer to try a set such as The Spirit of England, which offers complete performances of many well-loved pieces from Elgar, Vaughan Williams and many others. --Gary S. I have to confess I am not a classical music buff and know only the most commercialised of the pieces - which comprises quite a large section of this CD. However there were a few new pieces that I had not heard before and Nulla in Mundo pax Sincera is one of the most beautifl classical opera pieces that I have ever heard. Perhaps this CD will not appeal to true classical enthusiasts, but if you are, like me, looking to expand your Classical collection with something both safe (in that you have heard of some of the pieces) and slightly groundbreaking (some of the pieces although popular are still relatively new to most non classical music officianados) then this is a good choice.

I actually won this CD in a competition; what a revelation. It is wonderful. So inspiring and so relaxing. I am sure the track with Pachelbel Canon In D must surely be on the way out. I play it over and over again and it makes me tingle all over. Then there is Vivaldi -Nulla In Mundo Pax Sincera and then there is Rachmaninov. What more can I say? I am looking for more!

I'm going to be honest, I am 16 years old, and hardcore rock is normally my thing. I was lent this album by my boyfriend to help me with my GCSE revision. Not only did it help, but it also made me appreciate classical music a lot more too. I am so relaxed when I listen to this album, it has variety involved, different periods of music, not just the expected you normally find on a classical album. Each song takes me into a new journey where I do not have to think, just dream. I do play the piano anyway, but this album has inspired me to get back to playing it more often. A stunning CD that may even tempt me into leaving BRMB and giving Classic FM a go.

I first heard excerpts from this wonderful collection of soothing classics on my rental car radio during a trip to the UK. I bought it immediately and have enjoyed it countless times since then in my own car back home -- it is the absolute antidote to "road rage". I am thrilled to see that Classic FM has released another CD-set in this series.

We have weekend guests regularly and play these 3 CDs quite a bit during their stay, especially on Saturday mornings. Our guests never fail to comment on how soothing and lovely the background music is and how when they listen to the classical stations, they never hear this kind of music. We love playing them in our home whether or not we have company. If more people had these CDs in their cars for the morning and evening commute, there would be much less road rage.
