Editorial Review: Amazon.co.uk Review: The much anticipated follow-up to Paul Thomas Anderson's Boogie Nights, Magnolia features a specially orchestrated soundtrack, largely written and performed by Aimee Mann ('Til Tuesday member and sadly overlooked solo artist). Mann's voice has always been a suitable vehicle for conveying emotional turmoil and indelible sadness, and several tracks here ("Build That Wall", "You Do", "Driving Sideways") do so with the rich melodicism that informs her best work. Producer Jon Brion's sprightly horn arrangements for "Momentum" are an unexpected (though not completely unwelcome) splash of cold water. Only Mann's cover of the Harry Nilsson-penned Three Dog Night hit "One" backfires, as it simply doesn't deliver the same effective climax as the original. The two Supertramp tracks from their Breakfast in America LP tacked on at album's end are incongruous; but for anyone with an interest in Mann's melodic song writing, there are eight worthy originals waiting for you. --Rob O'Connor Customer Reviews

 Rating: - I don't normally buy soundtracks ......But this one is I have! The words leap out - and I mean that because normally I only listen to melodies in any song, very rarely the words, but Aime Mann's lyrics can't be ignored and they are intelligent as well as moving. The melodies are equally edgy and the sound production's excellent. Rating: - Excellent - moving and lovelyAs my title suggests this is another excellent album from Aimee Mann - it does seem you like her vibe or you don't. But I think she conveys brilliantly human emotion and her voice is able to bend to convey meaning in a way few artists seem to do. Perhaps its because her songs are so personal and like poetry, they emerge from events around all of us. The album is packed full of songs, like all of her albums, which are so moving and alluring that they keep you captivated. I think if you do like Mann, her music can be an absolute joy applying itself perfectly to the situations we face in life. 'Build That Wall' is so great - it seems to have an almost 'happy go lucky' beat and melody to it but the lyrics convey a sense of sadness... It ... I'm writing a few hours after buying this and I must have listened to it at least five times through already. Whether you've seen the film or not (and I recommend you do - it's genius) this should definitely be in your collection. Rating: - mann's magnoliaI have to agree, Aimee Mann's songs contend to be the best move soundtrack ever. An album in it's own right, the songs Save Me, Driving Sideways, You Do and Wise Up are sublime, and the rest aint bad either. The Supertramp songs spoil it a little bit, but overall a top, top album. Rating: - A treasurePaul Thomas Anderson admired Aimee Mann and her music so much so that he partly based a film on a number of her songs....the result? Magnolia. So, unsurprisingly, the resultant soundtrack consists mostly of Mann's work. And what a delight it is. Mann has an unsettling way with words. I have heard it said that she has such an abiility that when you hear her lyrics for the first time, they sound strangely familiar...almost an aural sense of deja vu. This album is a firm favourite amongst all those that I have known to listen to it and will continue to be held in great esteem for years to come. A true classic. |
