Editorial Review:
Amazon.co.uk Review: Nightmares on Wax's DJ Ease is best known for producing a pacific (even comedown) version of hip-hop or downtempo music. Compiling and mixing this album for the DJ Kicks series (which has included rapturously received collections from Stereo MCs and Kruder & Dorfmeister) he presents a subtle mix that moves from hazy breakbeat jazz into leftfield, modern (and politically correct) UK and US hip-hop. Using material from Mo'Wax (the high-velocity delivery of Blackalicious), A Tribe Called Quest, NYs Kenny Dope and Manchester's Grand Central, Ease scratches and fuses an expert selection of alt. hip-hop. At times he layers tunes which themselves sample other tunes to create a complex mesh of meaning and reference. He also includes a couple of his own productions and narcissistic sound-a-likes (DJ Trax's "This Place" is more N.O.W. than N.O.W."). "Overall Ease" journeys from serious music towards the light--he finishes, exultantly, with disco-inflected work from Deadbeats and Syrup. Going out on a high note. --Tony Marcus

If you are looking for another smokers delight, then you will be rather unhappy with this cd - it IS mostly trip hop, there are some good tracks on this disk but it is not nearly as mello as previous titles like car boot soul etc. You are better off getting stoned and listening to white noise.

This album takes you through a glorious journey allowing you to sit back and relax. Right from the first track you are blown away from the mellow beat and the uproars of jazz that follow the track all the way through. From the lovely Nightmares On Wax, track 6, that flows through to the sensitive beats of Kenny Dope's tracks 11 and 12 the album takes you on a journey of uplifting beats and wonderful sampling. This definately meets the expectations of Nightmares On Wax's "Carboot Soul". A great sophistication of mixing and choice of tracks that cannot be argued with. A great album for a fat session of chilling. You'll be glad when you've bought this, I know I was.

Don't ever listen to anyone that says Nightmares on Wax doesn't know how to write a phenomenal tune. He certainly does, and the strength of his solo albums Carboot Soul and Smoker's Delight will demonstrate this to anyone who cares to listen. However, there is a massive difference between the melodic pulsing rhythm of these previous albums and the more orthodox side of hip-hop that is on offer here. A noticable failing is that this quickly becomes very 'samey' - i loved the other albums because of the contrast of tracks like Nights Interlude, Me + You, Morse etc. This album sticks to its origins - bouncy hip-hop - perfect if that's what you want, but you kind of get the idea that Mr. Evelyn just got into and out of the studio as quickly as he ... I bought this album on the strength of N.O.W.'s album Carboot Soul and the credibility of the DJ Kicks series - Kruder & Dorfmeister and DJ Cam's efforts were spot on - and although there are some decent tracks on this, the overall sound is very cheesy and musically unsophisicated. For example I was expecting much more from Blackalicious whose contribution here is a monotonous rap attempting to humour the listener by its rapid continual acceleration. Ha. Aim's track is good but poorly mixed. If you're happy with cheesy, novelty disco-esque hip hop then this will suit; otherwise, steer clear.

The first time I heard Nightmares on Wax was at 4am, Tribal Gathering 1996', in the chill out tent. I was mashed and I liked it. A lot. Since then, they have released an album and this, DJ E.A.S.E's first mix album. Rather than reviewing the album I just want the reader to know how important this album has become to me and my friends. Whenever myself and my buddies need to chill and get away from the troubled world, we stick this on the CD player, dim the lights, pour a glass of Chardonnay and have a fat smoke. This album takes you on a journey of beats and soul which somehow makes everything ok. In my opinion, DJ E.A.S.E is the kid; and if you like the same kind of stuff as me, you will adore this album. I throw down a challenge to anybody ... Read More:
