Editorial Review: Amazon.co.uk Review: Tom Findlay and Andy Cato have steadily been dismantling their chill-out crown ever since the single "At The River" saw them float into coffee-table ubiquity. Lovebox finally stretches the duo's eclectic tastes beyond any semblance of continuity or restraint, finishing the job started on last year's Goodbye Country (Hello Nightclub). Named after Groove Armada's bi-monthly London club night, the duo's fourth album captures the excitement and diversity of pace you would expect from a masterful DJ set. While the opening track "Purple Haze" doesn't have a sniff of Hendrix's majestic histrionics, it is certainly Groove Armada's most rock & roll moment to date. Neneh Cherry lends her sultry voice to the lusty funk-fuelled hip-hop of "Groove Is On" and the urban soul of "Think Twice", and "Remember", with its languorous beat and swirling effects, nods toward their down-beat prime. Feisty dance-floor shakers are here in force though. "Madder", mixing the raps of MC M.A.D. with a pulsating bass and itchy guitar hook, kicks hard, and "The Final Shakedown" is an undiluted house anthem, albeit with a feisty ragga vocal. But one of the most surprising tracks is the rich, soul-drenched sophistication of "Hands of Time", a gorgeous reflection on love lost featuring the spine-tingling voice of Woodstock folk legend Richie Havens.  Rating:  - Is this really Groove Armada???Judging from the rest of the reviews, a lot of people like this album. But I'll bet there's quite a few GA fans who are mightily disappointed with it too. It sounds like GA trying to make a MOR pop/rock album. And for me, with the exception of one or two tracks, it just doesn't work. Rating:  - The "Groove's" most consistent album to dateGroove Armada have been around for longer that most people think, and there are plenty of tunes that the boys have released that many people don't realise are GA tracks. The band's last 2 albums were in my opinion, very different, but with several stand out moments. 'Lovebox' however is the most consistent album released by the boys. They seem to have done away with the chilled, background type vibe of their last offering and really energised things with a far more dancey and beaty selection of tracks. GA have always written smooth, cool tunes but this album adds a very eclectic contrasting sound, with dance, rap, rock and soul at the forefront in the majority of the tracks. Groove Armada have a habit of reinventing their sound, and they most certainly have with this, as well as retaining what you would expect from the boys. The top track on this album is MADDER, which is a loud, dancey rap tune that will get your reaching for the volume dial to turn it up! Nenah Cherry guest vocals on this album after a while in the dark. EASY is a fantastic basey dance track, which is superb. If you like this style of music, you really should own this album! Rating: - Good record.I've got this one and I am glad that I did buy it, not only am I a fan of GA now but this album is very good. There's quite a good collection of songs on this album, some nice and slow and relaxing and some are upbeat. It is definatly a must buy album. My favourite songs are: Remember, Hands of Time, Easy, Lovebox, Think Twice, Final Shakedown, Groove is On. And all the other songs are quite good, except for Be Careful What you say. Although I think this song was done by Andy Cato and no one else which is good. But I don't like it that much, but I know that whoever buy's this album they will love it a lot, now go off and buy it!! Rating: - Becoming more commercialAaargh now I have said, Groove Armada becoming more commercial. The thing with this album is that it sounds a little too polished and hence not a true GA sound. Dont get me wrong there are some brilliant tracks on here and probably some of the best they have ever done, its just the sound seems to be heading into a commercial zone. They seem to be trying to cram too many styles into one album. I saw GA live last year and when they performed some of the older songs alongside the newer ones the older ones did sound better. Fair play to them for trying to diversify into new sounds though and cannot wait for the next album. |
