 Rating:  - Too good to ignoreTangerine Dream's 1986 album "Underwater Sunlight" is the second of their major themed studio albums, building on the success of their previous release, "Le Parc". It also marks Paul Haslinger's debut with the band, following the departure of Johannes Schmoelling some six months earlier. Inspired perhaps by Edgar Froese's love for scuba diving, this album evokes various aspects of the underwater world but without resorting to any hackneyed techniques or sonic images which are commonplace on those 'natural ambient recordings' to be found all over the place nowadays. Don't worry that this disc is awash with 'soothing and relaxing synthesiser sounds (TM)' played over taped whale and dolphin sounds and the splashing of the sea, though! ... Read More: Rating:  - Some do,some don'tAs with many Tangerine Dream fans my age my first taste of 'Krautrock' was via 'Phaedra', in 1974, at the tender age of 16. Why did I like it? Because, for forty minutes or so, it took me on a journey to another place, a journey where my imagination was the vehicle to wherever I wanted to go. Next stop 'Zeit' but nothing happened, I wasn't going anywhere, it wasn't working. I decided many years ago that I couldn't /wouldn't try to explain why TD music was good, bad or indifferent using 'Mellotrosyntheticsequence speak' because I didn't see the point. It either lifts me out of my favourite arm chair or it doesn't and that's all that matters to me. Underwater Sunlight doesn't work for me and the only place it takes me to is a National Trust gift shop ... Read More: Rating: - A Later Classic...This is the one Tangerine Dream CD that my wife plays... "Song Of The Whale Pt2 - To Dusk" was even used as a backdrop to part of our wedding video and never fails to bring a tear to my eye..... There is real romantic beauty here in these tracks. Paul Haslinger brought something fresh to Tangerine Dream, a heart and soul in the compositions and playing, and a maturity to the style. I really love this album and hope that this brief review encourages you to purchase this CD. RECOMMENDED WITH FEELING !!!!!!!!! |
