Editorial Review:
Amazon.co.uk Review: In Time Will Tell Georgia blues veteran Robert Cray has taken the freedom offered by a change in record labels to team with keyboardist, songwriter and producer Jim Pugh in a set of performances that are by turns looser, funkier, and more far-ranging in their subject matter than more typical blues. John Lennon once said of the music's primacy that "the blues is a chair". Yet for many artists the genre often seems more like a straitjacket, one that even a modern legend like Robert Cray has struggled to escape during the course of a multi-Grammy career.
Cray wastes no time in boldly staking out his new turf on the pointed, country-gospel-rooted, anti-war "Survivor". From there he takes another jarring turn into the psych-pop of "Up in the Sky," trading his trademark Strat for the rare, distinctive tones of an electric sitar. Even Cray's more familiar blues tack is variously tinged with slippery swamp tones ("Back Door Slam"), slinky Memphis grooves ("Your Pal", featuring the Family Stone horns, and "What You Need") and the propulsive Caribbean inflections of "Distant Shore". Those more adventurous forays only underscore the elegant drama of "Time Makes Two", where Cray dramatically evokes the blues' holy trinity: a broken heart, a soulful voice and a lyrical guitar. --Jerry McCulley, Amazon.com

Another good album, and I've got over half a dozen of his already. The three tracks that really stand out for me are What You Need (Good Man), Your Pal and Back Door Slam.
I like to make up compilations of my favorite tracks of an artist I really like and the three tracks above are excellent, especially Back Door Slam, just put it on repeat. Bob dosen't usually use effects and I can only describe it as a little like the Harry Lime Theme, and it works brilliantly. Thers's also some intense finger work and I love his voice and the way he picks and bends notes.
Two of the tracks, Survivor and Distant Shore are OK musically but have a strong reference to Desert Storm/Military Service.
Glad to see and hear he and his band are ... Read More:

The last few albums by Robert Cray I have found in the main sleep-inducing so it was with some trepidation that I approached this, his latest release and what a surprise I had. This is "Young Bob" exploring new and original musical territory. The guitar break on the string-laden last offering "Time Makes Two" is Robert Cray at his lyrical and expressive best. I defy anyone not to have a tingle or two up the spine when it begins ... SUBLIME!
Some of the tracks are the Robert Cray we have gotten used to but he has employed more soul and vigour into these selections that on his recent Rykodisc offerings. He seems to be really enjoying himself and his voice and guitar playing is now underpinning the music rather than separating from ... Read More:
