R.E.M's new single "animal" is well worth the money. The song itself is one of their best for years. The B-sides are reasonable, a live version of "Pretty Persuation" and a live video of Losing my Religion from the Weisbaden concert during their 2003 world tour. This video however is contained on the "Perfect Square" concert DVD.

When I heard for the 1st time, I thought it lost a lot of charm and character that their last single Bad Day had. It was quite a disappointment that this song is released as a single. The other tracks are also adequate but none of them even stand out to make this single a great investment. Buy this single if you wish, but don't have any high expectations for this single, otherwise you might be devastated at the quality of songs used on the single.

The majority of people who heard the song “Animal” on R.E.M.’s “In Time: The Best of R.E.M.” compilation were disappointed. I was extremely disappointed, as the song sounded to rough around the edges and the tune just didn’t get me absorbed. After listening to the song many times, it has become one of my favourite R.E.M. songs of late, and this is because “Animal” has such an odd yet original tune. The most persistent listener will be able to see what I love so much about this song.
However, that was the “In Time” version. That version was quite flawed, and many people, including the band themselves, realised this. This single version of “Animal” is a refined version of the “In Time” version, albeit better. ... Read More:

'What's the big deal? I'm an animal!' sings Michael Stipe in the chorus to this bizzare piece of hi-fi, Animal; perhaps the most (lyrically) incomprehensible song R.E.M. have written since 'The Sidewinder Sleeps Tonite'. 'It's calling me to work it out!' what does it all mean? Who cares what it means? The quality of this song stems from it's elusiveness, coloured by the sonic soundscape, Peter Buck's slightly 60's sounding guitar line and the clever use of backing vocals by both Mike Mills and Michael Stipe. However, all these elements thrown together don't add up to much more than noise (albeit an interesting noise). Animal does not stand up to the billiance of IN TIME's first single, the frankly brilliant rock anthem, Bad Day, but is nontheless ... Read More:
