This is an exercise in nostalgia, an evocation of the sounds of BBC radio in the 50's and 60's, or of drawing room culture from even earlier in the century. I grew up listening to most of these songs on the radio, in the days before (and after) the Beatles and the emerging pop culture reshaped popular broadcasting.
The CD recaptures the sounds and feel of classic recordings - complete with crackle and hiss on some tracks. The texture of the sound is nostalgic as well as the choice of recordings. And here you'll find a repertoire which runs from the morally uplifting 'Holy City' to the acerbic 'Gendarmes', from the genius of Robeson to the agonies of Florence Foster Jenkins. Gone are the days when these recordings lay in dog-eared paper covers on shelves in the cupboard of a wind up gramophone. Reissues such as this allow us to handle them with ease and play them without damage. I am sure they sound better too, and are reproduced at playing speeds that are more correct than when I first played them on the family gramophone.
Almost all were best sellers in their day, a day when popular taste desired the religious or ersatz religion, the pretty, the mini piano concerto or gramophone favourites such as Richard Tauber, Fiodor Chaliapin and Elisabeth Schumann. I am not sure that Florence Foster Jenkins fits into this context (does she fit into any?), and gramophones were long since obsolete when the Cats' Duet ... Read More:
