Editorial Review:
Amazon.co.uk Review: Some singer/songwriters (think Paul Westerberg and Elliott Smith) develop their world-weariness through the unforgiving trials of passing years and the heart-breaking grind of the music business. Others (Van Morrison, Neil Young) seem to have sprung from out of nowhere with the fully formed soul of a life well-lived. Ray LaMontagne belongs with the latter. On this, his debut, LaMontagne has crafted a handful of quietly devastating meditations on life and love--and delivered them with a raspy vocal all his own. The simple, mournful lyrics of "Burn," "Shelter" and the title track recall a Hank Williams ballad, and the reserved production by alt-country/Americana genius Ethan Johns (the Jayhawks, Ryan Adams, Kings of Leon) make this a great disc for smoky Saturday nights, and rainy Sunday mornings. --Ben Heege

Take the rawness of Tom Waits, the depth of lowell George and the emotion of Tim Buckley and you'll be on the right track to Trouble. Think of your fave albums and how they moved you when you first heard them, highway 61, Grace, Astral Weeks, Pet sounds, Kind Of Blue, Raindogs, Sailin Shoes, and more classic albums to choose from, Trouble is up there with them. This should have been bought at a record fair 15 years ago on vinyl and released circa 1971. Words are not enough to express and with my misspent youth behind me now in my 30's I implore you to turn the lights down, pour a glass of chilled wine, sit out in the summer evening, which this album feels it was recorded for and listen, absorb and relish in the amazing collection of moods and ... Boy, oh boy what can you say! Bought 'Trouble'due to a recommendation from a friend, and was absolutely blown away by the understated intensity of not just the raspy, wailing, tender voice, but the sheer emotion of the songs and the songwriting. I implore people to buy this album, go to his gigs..... if there is any justice in the world, this guy will be a star!

This album and Ray LAmontagne himself bring mixed feelings to me. I love this album and a day has'nt gone by in the past 18months when i hav'nt listened to at least one of the tracks. From the moment the opening track starts "trouble" I was hooked. Every song has a beautiful sadness about it "shelter, Jolene" and with Rays voice rasping through the heart felt lyrics it doesnt take long before you relise this guy is a geniune talent. The only problem I have is I want everyone to know how good this album is, however i dont want to share it - its all mine!!

I first heard of Ray Lamontagne on myspace, when I was reading Joshua Radin's (also amazing) list of musicians he liked. I owned all of the albums apart from Ray Lamontagne, so took a chance that I would like it and ordered it from Amazon. When I received the album, I saw that there was a song named Hannah! As a woman who is obsessed with music, I have always wanted to listen to a song with my name in, and this song is perfect. The lyrics to every song on this album are touching and beautiful, reminiscent to Ben Harper. Ray's voice is husky but sweet, like a cigarette dipped in honey. Thoroughly recommended to everyone who appreciates amazing lyrics and great music

What a fantastic voice. I love this CD. It has so many quality songs written by a great singer. He puts plenty of emotion into the songs, kind of like Jeff Buckley did, but with a different style. Some would describe Ray's music as country/folk but its nothing like it. Take it from me, I hate country music, but love this CD. When you play it, you are instantly imersed in another world. It is so laid back and fresh at the same time. Jolene is such a sweet lament, it could make you cry just listening to it.
