Get it clear in your head first. This is a really great album. It might take a few listens for some, but it's definately worth the effort. There is a "but" though. I have it on good authority that there are people in the world who do not like Sufjan Stevens, Devendra Banhart, Bright Eyes, Belle and Sebastian, Ry Cooder and the like. So if you are one of those people you should probably give it a miss. If, however, you are a true lover of beautifull music, then this is a must buy. It really is a fantasic album that gets better with every listen.

Can't remember why I bought this album... I certainly hadn't read any reviews or heard any songs. It didn't impress me at first but then I never gave it time. On repeated listens it slowly sunk in. It's a very good album... up there with the best of last year. A testament to well crafted songs that stay with you, instead of catchy hooks that become tiresome after three listens.

I bought this album basically on the strength of amazon reviews... and was not disappointed. It's essentially a country album, but is far darker and more intense than anything you might expect from this genre. His wonderful voice -the first thing to strike me about this record - it can be soft, gentle but also rich. dark and gravelly. His lyrics are compellingly dark, but relativley straight-forward. The range of instrumentation is enthralling, particularly on the epic last track. Quite simply atmospheric, emotionally intelligent, beautiful song-writing. Highly recommended!!

Hinson's record has greatly surpassed all of my expectations, even though I was a huge fan of his demos. Its strengths rest on a number of foundations--simple, compelling lyrics repeated hypnotically; unique vocal quality (honest and rough) supplemented by layers of harmony; huge variations in style and instrumentation (beautifully simple piano melodies, horn ensembles, screeching guitars, melodic feedback, acoustic "hillbilly" riffs, etc. all in various combinations). My favorite songs include: "Yourself Asleep Again," "Don't You," "As You Can See," "I Still Remember," "The Nothing," "You Lost Sight In Me," and "The Day Texas Sank to the Bottom of the Sea."
I highly recomend this album. I also recommend the singles with b-sides. ... Read More:

Stylish and at times engaging this album suffers from somewhat overlong and plodding arrangements at times which lack progression or musical excitement. The ingredients are there, and some of the songs suggest that future albums will be worth a listen but as it is this one just lacks something special to lift it from the ordinary. Worth a listen if you like this (but a whole lot better I'd say) is Mojave 3 'Spoon and Rafter'.
