ok - i love budgie, and the first four albums are some of the greatest rock albums ever made. my gripes here are - firstly, the extras. aint there no out-takes and demos from around this time that could have been included? instead of re-makes of classic songs from this album which are, frankly, inferior? there must be something in the archives?
secondly, the re-mastering. i was expecting great things. but whilst the sound is nice and fat, it seems to me that its nowhere near as punchy as it could have been. in fact, if you listen to this and the vinyl back to back theres really not that much difference. this is evident by the recording levels which are not very loud at all. i understand that the band had a hand in the re-mastering? ... This is the second Budgie album and to hear it remastered is a real tweet (treat) sorry about that. the 1st album Budgie has some great material on it and also their third, Never turn your back on a friend. But to me and many others this is the best out of their first five. And the riffs and bass lines just flow.In the middle there are a couple of slowies which are just beautiful!. there are more killer hooks on this CD than a japanese whaling ship I kid you not.. Pure seventies rock and what a rockin` trio they were and still are, different personell now but still a great band. this produced by Roger Bain who also sat in the producers chair for a few early Black Sabbath albums not to be overlooked if you love 70`s rock!!

For most Budgie fans the third album is the benchmark. But as far as I'm concerned, this is the one that sends shivers down my ageing back. I never ever tire of listening to this record. Right from the opening guitar/bass intro riff of Whiskey River to the final chord on Stranded this is an album that has no weak spots and no fillers and never lets up. It's relentless. All the weaknesses of the first album were gone and what was left was raw, ultra heavy rock in its most potent form. Bass player/vocalist Burke Shelley is one of the truly great but underrated singers to emerge in the 70s. His delivery throughout this album is faultless and his bass playing is magnificent. Guitarist Tony Bourge really lets rip on this one and I stand ... Read More:

I thought that Budgie's debut album was an absolute diamond of an album, and Squawk, their second album really is every bit as good as their first. The album kicks off with Whiskey River, as memorable a song as you'll ever hear, mainly due to it's incredibly infectious hook-line, and from then on you just know you're really going to enjoy listening to this album. Young Is A World is the other great standout track here, a truly beautiful song; this is one you'll never forget. Stranded is a good old-fashioned thumping rock track, so crank up the volume on this one. Overall you have a good mixture here of both hard rock and wonderful acoustic ballads, so something for all tastes. For the genuine rock aficionado, you must have this one in your CD collection. ...
