I first saw this film when my own little girl was about the same age as the child in the film. It turned me inside out! The lead actress Norma Aleandro gives one of the finest performances I have ever seen. Hector Alterio as her husband plays the part of the irritated and increasingly panic struck husband brilliantly too. Incidently, the two came together again in 2001 to play a devoted husband and wife with Alzheimer's in 'Son of the Bride'. Unsurprisingly, they steal the show.

The Official Story is an excellent example of how to mix political cinema with human drama, avoiding agitprop or crude sloganeering to put a human face on the issue of Argentina's disappeared - in particular the children taken away from undesirables and given to well-connected families who won't ask any questions. When one well-heeled adopted mother learns of this and begins to suspect that her adopted daughter may be one of those children, rather than turn into a sermon the film focuses on her own fears as she tries to disprove the possibility until ultimately she is in the same uncertain hell as the families of the disappeared - she can suspect, but she can never truly know.

During the military junta rule in Argentina, the children of people seen as subversives were taken from their parents and given for adoption to couples friendly to the junta. The adopted mother of one of these children, Alicia, is a woman who has been sheltered and until now has accepted everything she's been told without question. However, she feels she needs to find out where her child came from and gets no answers from her husband. In uncovering her child's past, Alicia finds things about her country's--and her husband's--recent past that shake the foundations of the little world she had built up. Excellent acting, especially by Norma Aleandro.
