Editorial Review: Amazon.co.uk Review: Refining and extending the legacy of both mid- and late-period Coltrane, saxophonist and flautist Charles Lloyd has made a whole bunch of excellent recordings for ECM. Sangam might just be the best yet. I heard this unusual trio - where Lloyd is accompanied by Indian tabla master Zakir Hussain and Eric Harland, the fine drummer in Lloyd’s regular quartet - at the 2004 Berlin Jazz festival. The group’s blend of flowing, sensuous rhythm, subtly conceived dynamics and heart-on-sleeve testifying had the audience baying for more. The superbly recorded seventy five minutes of Sangam document a live May 2004 performance at Santa Barbara’s Lobero Theatre, which is every bit as engaging as I recall that Berlin concert to have been. Lloyd is in terrific form on all his horns, including tenor, alto and various flutes: he also plays some fine piano from time to time (as does Harland) The depth and range of interaction between Husssain and Harland is such that one never misses the contributions that regular employment of a fourth, harmonically-oriented instrumentalist might have brought to music that seems to emerge from some infinitely deep and refreshing well of archetypal East-West resource and import. Terrific stuff, and undoubtedly one of the outstanding albums of 2006.--Michael Tucker |
