Editorial Review:

Amazon.co.uk Review:
To fake or not to fake: That is the question consumers must answer for themselves in assessing this feat of aural Photoshopping: an "imaginary concert" created by combining recently discovered soundboard tapes of Ray Charles's vocals from a mid-'70s European show and newly recorded backing by the Count Basie Orchestra--the "ghost band," still on the road 22 years after Count's passing. Charles is in exceptional voice, singing the heck out of standards like "How Long Has This Been Going On?," Genius classics like "Busted," and pop covers like Melanie's "Look What They've Done to My Song." His performance is a thrilling corrective to forgettable posthumous albums like Genius Loves Company, designed to cash in on the new audience created for him by the movie Ray. But as competently as the Basie band fill in the blanks under the direction of Bill Hughes, with Joey DeFrancesco guesting on organ, most of the new arrangements are rather pallid, and the ensemble lacks the personality of both the Basie orchestra and Charles's best groups. And as attractive as Ray Sings, Basie Swings may be for the casual listener, the gimmickry will appall serious fans, particularly since neither Charles nor Basie--who never collaborated in life--was around to lend his approval. Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Anything's possible in a digital World
Count Basie never backed Ray Charles-though he could easily have done as his band was used to back Jackie Wilson on a couple of early 60s hits.
There can't be anything wrong with this sort of thing-it carries on a couple of legendary names further

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - Shame about the pianist
The Ray Charles vocals are as expected, the Basie Band immaculate and swinging as ever. However, there are no piano solos from Ray (surely they were worth including) and the Count is not in the Band. The Basie Band is always very very good but when the Count adds his bit everything just goes up by 20%.
Two splendid pianists either of whom would have lifted this album to 5 stars.
Nevertheless, this is an interesting and enjoyable album.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Ray Sings Basie Swings
Not a find, more a revelation?
This is a magnificent album with Ray Charles at his very best as always. The combination of Ray Charles and the Count Basie Orchestra was sheer Genius, it was just something waiting to happen. This is an absolutely swinging collection. Two Genius's in their prime and swinging like crazy. A brilliant dubbing exercise that has created something wonderful. To me it was two distinctive generations of music coming together and gelling like crazy. Buy it and make the neighbours move?

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Moving performances
This is one of the best Big Band and vocal albums i have ever owned! Forget the crap about being engineered in a studio. It is true that Ray Charles did not sing with this Band but who cares?? His vocals are just about as passionate and heart felt as any you will find recorded and it's fantastic that we can hear them in these great arrangements. The trumpet playing blows me away!! And as for Ray - well, his singing reduced me to tears at times, he is so involved and and so awesome about it! Wow! I rate this a must have album for all Big Band and Vocal lovers.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Fresh Masterpiece
This combines 30 year old in-concert vocals with new arrangements recently recorded with the current Count Basie Orchestra, some new Raelettes and Hammond B3 from Joey DeFrancesco. It is a studio confection that shouldn't work - but in practice it sounds as good as any Ray Charles album ever recorded and better than most. Ray Charles at his peak - and it all sounds so fresh.
