Editorial Review:
Amazon.co.uk Review: A major criticism of the Foo Fighters' self-titled debut was its supposed lack of, you know, passion among the well-crafted songs and well-crafted rock. This time out, if it's wreckage you want, it's wreckage you get. The Colour and the Shape grows deeper the more it's played, with the band's ripping power more than matched by Dave Grohl's fascinating examinations of pain and divorce. There is even a convincing long slow ballad, "November Stars", whose intensity should win over doubters. If that doesn't work, then the screaming "My Hero" will.--Rickey Wright

I bought this album as I knew bits of the Foos but hadn't really listened to them before. The music is brilliant in parts but vocals a bit too "shouty" for my taste personally.

This is my favourite Foo Fighters album, I have owned it for years and still play it regularly. If you are just getting into the Foos then I would buy this first. It sounds a lot crisper and finished then the first album and you can just let play the whole way through as it flows really well. It also has Dave Grohl drumming on nearly all of it.
Although I like some of the later Foo Fighters singles there hasn't been an album that has matched this. It has the well known classic singles such as 'Everlong' and 'Monkey Wrench' but also memorable album tracks such as 'Hey, Johnny Park!' and 'Up In Arms'.

The Foo's Colour & the Shape I think is their best album, though they have plenty of albums that are a long way from disapointing.
I have yet to hear a Foo CD worth less than 4 stars, -I have 2 more to try yet-, but even if they not as good as their average, FF still got more top albums than the average bear.
If this is a 5* CD with some extra tracks on, even if they are rough/ not to everyones taste, thats a 5* CD with poor extras, not a 3* CD! COME ON!
Extras are usually 'not of merchantable quality' , thats why they not released previously. Sometimes theres a killer track, but usually they sate only the thirstiest of fans.

Time and again I have been disappointed by Foo Fighters albums, simply because every release after 1997 has failed to live up to The Colour And The Shape. Upon the release of every new album the band proclaim it'll be better than anything they have ever done but I don't think they will ever better this album. This is when the Foos blended blistering rock with great melodies to near perfection. Let's use Monkey Wrench as an example - a finely tuned rock beast with awesome riffs and the kind of "free spirit" passion the band has struggled to maintain since. This was an exctiting and accomplished album with almost no weak links and yet I find most of Foo Fighters new stuff relatively bland these days.
So why only three stars for ... Read More:

This album is probably the Foo Fighter's best album, and really show cases the talent of the backing band and lyricist. The album's best tracks are "My Hero" and "Everlong", both of which are absolutely superb, and there are strong tracks like "Monkey Wrench" and "Up in Arms" to keep our blood flowing nicely. The main feature of this album is the fact so many different approaches are tried to tracks and sound, without ever losing the distinctively rocky feel to the whole album, and Grohl's lyrical flair is well exercised by the different types of track. This is strongly recommended to Foo Fighter's fans.
