Editorial Review:

Amazon.co.uk Review:
The follow-up to one of the least unexpected bestsellers of recent years, In Our Nature is a reminder that Jose Gonzalez's musical roots lie not in acoustic balladry (though he's undeniably a wizard on the guitar, frequently compared to Nick Drake and with good reason) but in the fecund hardcore punk scene of his home town of Gothenburg. Not only does Gonzalez hit the guitar very hard indeed, rather undercutting his image as a sensitive singer-songwriter, but much of In Our Nature discusses man's weakness and propensity to violence, the perennial subject of vague protest. "How Low", "Killing for Love" and the hopeful title track are as quietly powerful as one man can get with a guitar. His take on Massive Attack's oft-covered "Teardrop", already something of a modern classic, outdoes recent versions by Newton Faulkner and Elbow. The lovely, relatively understated closer "Cycling Trivialities", an epic by Gonzalez's concise standards, sounds like a one-man Simon and Garfunkel, becoming denser and denser with each minute. The entire thing is over in hardly more than half an hour, though whether anyone would want such a relentless attack to last any longer is moot. In Our Nature is that rarity, a contemporary album that leaves the listener wanting more. --Steve Jelbert

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Stunning
I loved Jose's last album, Veneer, but this just stuns beyond reason.
It might be a little difficult to believe that there was much more that could be done with his sound, given the amazing quality of the first album, but it has been done. This album has the same sort of sound as Veneer did and yet it is almost impossibleto get the two confused.
In Our Nature feels a little more aggressive in style than Veneer, and feels more passionate.
It is a truly mesmerising album and, in my opinion is the best of 2007, despitemany other fantastic albums (including Marion Raven's Set Me Free).

Rating: 2 out of 5 stars - Doesn't do enough
Not bad, nice playing etc but just lacking in texture and adventure. Try Nick Worrall for the sort of thing you wish this this was.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - José Delivers.
I've read reviews claiming "In Our Nature" is merely "Veneer Part 2" and sees Gonzalez re-hashing a winning formula. I feel these accusations are a little unjust. "Veneer" showcased such a wonderfully unique singer/songwriter sound that it would be hard and pointlessly dangerous to move too far adrift. Unfortunately the classic sophomore criticism is apparent thanks to this inimitable style; grand expectations of something new and better become rife. I feel that while the overall sound is undeniably similar, the album is in no way the same. It touches on different subjects and evokes new moods and atmospheres.

As I said earlier, "In Our Nature" provides idiosyncratic Gonzalez songs, such as "How Low" and "Killing For Love", both ... Read More:

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - In Our Nature
This is another top album from Jose Gonzalez. It is very much in the same vein as veneer, which is no bad thing, and like that album it gets better with repeated listening. It doesn't have quite as much impact as veneer but you still get his rhythmic, almost percussive, guitar playing and his superb vocals layered over the top. Some songs hits you at once, like the album closer 'cycling trivialities', whilst others grow on you. I agree that the lyrics seem a touch more mature, but they weren't that bad on veneer anyway! Overall another great album from Jose to put on and drift away to.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Breathtaking
It's such a shame that people only seem to know Jose Gonzalez for his covers (most notably the omnipresent "Heartbeats"). He's an immensely talented musician and songwriter in his own right, as this record shows. It's beautiful, complex and captivating after just a few listens. Stand out tracks have to be the single "Down The Line" and the dark, heartbreaking "The Nest". Overall, an achingly beatiful record which shows that Jose Gonzalez is destined for greatness.
