 Rating:  - Nothing Wrong With An Old HatAnyone who knows me well would be certain to tell you about my fondness for hats. I am a Wolf who owns and wears many hats. More than fifty in The Cave at the last count. A veritable Imelda Marcos of hats. My favorite hat is a very old hat. It once belonged to a woodcutter. How I came to own it must, to some degree, be left to your imaginations. Suffice to say that its' acquisition involved a totally justified act of revenge on my part for the death of my great-great grandfather, following a complex and regrettable chain of events which has become remembered over time in woodland lore as 'The Red Bonnet Incident'. It is a brown and somewhat battered brown ... Read More: Rating: - The Diva is Back!In my honest opinion this is Chaka's finest work in quite a few years. Soulful, funky, raw....No "over production" on this set, which allows Chaka to lead the way with her unique vocal talents. Rating:  - Funk This, "House" was MUCH funkier....I adore Chaka Khan. She is one independant woman with guts. Just look at her track record. She left Warner Bros and started her own record label in 1998, and recorded (with the help of Prince) "Come to My House", which was hailed by the critics and justly so. It was criminally buried because there was no promotional backing (being her own small record label). Forward 9 or so years, CK signs to Sony. Funk This is a brilliant CD dont get me wrong, but I'm strangely suspicious that it has won two grammy's when "House" was a far superior record. All hail Chaka anyway, because for me, she has finally gotten the grammy's she should've had 10 years ago........ Rating: - A fine return by one soul music's greatest singers.Known for the ladies anthem "I'm Every Woman", the memorable cover of the Prince song "I Feel For You" and being the lead vocalist for 70s funk band Rufus, Yvette Marie Stevens (aka Chaka Khan) releases her new album titled Funk This. The unique attribute of Ms Khan is her voice, within the world of music it's distinctive & this new CD reiterates this forcefully, an album that at times takes you back to those exciting days when she was with Rufus yet at the same time its production is a very modern sound. Chaka continues her association with Prince by doing a haunting version of "Sign O The Times" in a way only she can, teams up with modern R&B singer Mary J.Blige on the percussive sounding "Disrespectful". ... Read More: Rating: - Really Really Good - Doing What She Does Best!This is a great return to what I think Chaka does best. It demonstrates the full range of her vocal abilities. The songs are all listenable. I guess I would question the merits of re-recording classic hits as I'm not sure where the added value is. I think the duet with Michael McDonald is great and it's obvious from stuff like Back In The Day and Disrespectful why she is revered the world over by public and peers for her contribution to RnB. My favourite Chaka album since CK was released in the late 80's! Check it out. |
