Editorial Review:

Amazon.co.uk Review:
Ghosts I–IV, the new album from Nine Inch Nails, sees the legendary rockers explore some serious new sonic territory. Comprised of almost two hours of music composed and recorded over a ten-week period, Ghosts I-IV boasts 36 tracks described by Trent Reznor as a "soundtrack for daydreams". That's perhaps true--especially if your daydreams are particularly dark and surreally beautiful. Swelling synths, infectious (and often maudlin) piano melodies, baleful drones and glitchy textures are the unorthodox instruments employed here rather than the standard guitars, drums and stadium-fuelled braggadocio. The immediate impression is more post-rock than indie rock, with sincere nods to avant practitioners like Sigur Ros and Radiohead. But contributions from the likes of Adrian Belew (King Crimson) ensure the mystical ambience is punctuated with blasts of electric psychedelia, and the NIN sound remains somehow recognizable beneath the surface. A hugely successful and beautifully otherworldly trip to outer musical realms. --Danny McKenna

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - what he does.
I'm new to the Trent Reznor fan club, having heard 'Spiral' years ago, which left me cold. The lyrics didn't gel and i couldn't relate to someone that depressed.

Having started my NIN purchases with Year Zero, the level of expectation hovers above reasonable, but 'Ghosts' does not disappoint. If you're a fan you own it, and you can download it for $5 on the NIN website.

One thing i have to comment on though is the NIN fanclub - hilarious! Even Amazon states in reviews for both 'Ghosts' and the fantastic follow-up 'The Slip' that they're the greatest releases by NIN - seems no-one can make up their minds.

Just enjoy - who cares which release is best?
If they're good they're good - and they are.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Words cannot...
There are few albums that can be described as being raw, melodic, melancholy, agressive, dramatic, sinister, distant and unforgiving, and perhaps that's a good thing.Yet Ghosts is all of these and several more I couldn't think of.Being only a recent devotee of NIN,I can't claim to grasp the full vision of this album, but it overpowered me and chilled me.It lacks a direction,or a cohesive force behind it,but it haunts and lulls at once.If youl ike direct,to-the-point music,I would not advise you buy this album, but if you just...want to hear something different, then DO.

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - Perfect mood music
I'll start by saying straight away that this won't be everyone's cup of tea. But if it is then this really is a great album.

Obviously it's all instrumental, and the tracks are all around two minutes in length. The tracks flit between slow, ambient pieces to harder, industrial tunes, but somehow they all flow very nicely together.

Ultimately, this isn't a studio album, it's two hours of mood music you can start playing and transport yourself into your own dark world. It's perfect if, like me, you like having music on all the time but sometimes need to concentrate on something else as well.

I've given it three stars because it's something so unique - it's either a fantastic instrumental set or a boring, ... Read More:

Rating: 2 out of 5 stars - Even further down the spiral
After great anticipation of this supposedly "important" release from Trent Reznor I can honestly say that Ghosts 1-4 is far from the masterpiece many fans are hailing it as.

I've been a Nails fan since Pretty Hate Machine in the early nineties and have admired Reznors collaborations and musical experimentation, but this just seems like a rush job, even though he's known to be one of the most methodical perfectionists in the industry.
Far from this being a 'soundtrack for daydreams', if your daydreams are as erratic as this then i'd suggest swift medical help. It lurches from lazy mechanical durges to off key piano akin to a Les Dawson sketch.

With little of his trademark industrial power riffs and certainly nothing ... Read More:

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Mesmerizing
I think this is brilliant - you really can see the nine inch nails in it. It is all intrumentals, so unfortunately no vocals or anthems here, but still not to be missed. This is music that is easy to get lost in, so amazing for relaxing, but it does have really nice melodies and tunes across the tracks.

Overall, as slightly peculiar offering, but not one too be missed once you have listened to most of their other albums and liked them. If you're in that position, this is unmissable for 36 tracks of raw trent reznor, for a very low price.
