The direction of Mostly Autumn is slowly changing; their sound is evolving in terms of maturity and it is displayed in spades here. More Fleetwood Mac than Pink Floyd these days and this is shown no better than on the rocking opener 'Fireside'. The mixture of excellent musicianship, shades of light and dark, soft and heavy and exemplary vocal harmonies between Josh and Findlay, really mark an overall improvement in both production and diversity here.
There are a couple of strong ballads sung by Heather and as she matures, her voice becomes a dead ringer for the late, great Karen Carpenter - great praise indeed (even though musically, I find these the weakest tracks on the album). And the occasional awkwardness I found with the ... Read More:

I must agree with the previous reviewer J Foulger, I have followed Mostly Autumn's career develop over the last 7-8 years,I have seen the band live 7 times and I have bought all their albums the last 3 albums I bought without even hearing a note (ltd edition versions) and they have cost £27 per item which I dont mind paying because they must struggle financially and it would be a shame if a band this talanted called it a day.But I feel that this album as been affected by changes in the band over the last few years, its very wishy washy, apart from the first track every other tracks starts off very slow and then ends up sending me off to sleep, I'm glad to hear that Iain Jennings is back in the band because he has been badly missed, but hand ... I got this for my birthday a few weeks ago, and I've been listening to it ever since. I have to say that on first viewing I wasn't overly impressed by it; however with subsequent listenings the album has grown on me a lot.
The album starts strongly: The opener 'Fireside' has a great lead riff - first played on an acoustic guitar, then on an electric once the song gets into its stride. MA sound fantastic when they choose to really push the electric guitars into 'rock mode'. 4.5/5
The second track, 'The Second Hand', is altogether different, a piano-driven tune that has an almost dreamy feel to it, and I love this track too. It is perhaps the most distinctive track on the album. 4.5/5
The third track, 'Flowers ... Read More:

I am not giving a track by track review because that's already been done. As a Mostly Autumn fan from the very beginning I have enjoyed their progression from the folk influences of the first 2 albums, through the melodic prog' rock and into the heavier sounding later albums. Until Glass Shadows I rated their offerings at 4 and 5 stars; this new direction towards a more 'pop' style almost got just 3 stars.
There are too many tracks that either start with a slow plinking piano or just never get going; the title track is the worst on the album and I skip it every time.
Here's hoping a band that made such an impression on me don't sink into mediocraty with their next attempt.

I first encountered Mostly Autumn by chance early last year, when Bob Harris played Fading Colours from the last album Heart Full of Sky on his late night Radio 2 programme. I was only listening because I was returning home late in the car. Fading Colours blew me away. I quickly bought- and loved- Heart Full of Sky, and sought out Mostly Autumn's `none more prog' back catalogue.
Mostly Autumn are one of those bands that hardly anyone has heard of but are actually really popular. As an avid prog fan in my youth their music is reminiscent of prog's great days, but with a modern feel, and a little bit of folk thrown in. Pretty much perfect, then.
All this brings me to Glass Shadows, their 2008 release. I have a problem with ... Read More:
