 Rating:  - I'm not a die hard vdgg fanI am not a die hard van der graaf generator fan and I feel that this is easily their best album particularly from Roncevaux onwards (which is the b side on vinyl). The poor quality of the recording has its advantages in that it gives it a kind of 'punk' rawness (one can see why John Lydon was a fan of Peter Hammil at the time) and it also obscures the majority of vdgg's ridiculous lyrics which are difficult to stomach at the best of times (see 'Godbluff'). The track 'Faint and Forsaken' shows the musicians demonstrating a visceral intensity which I haven't experienced with any noise band since. It's like dying and being reborn - the build up of the screaming hammond organ to an unbearable degree and then the release. Unfortunately, it's a bit ... Read More: Rating:  - A poor quality recording. For die hard fans only.If you're looking for somewhere to start your VDGG collection, stop reading now. This album is not for you. It's basically collection of studio outtakes from the missing years of VDGG between the split of 1972 and the reformation in 1975. There are a some songs of listenable quality. The jazzy instrumental "Tarzan" for one and the lyrically amusing "The Liqudiator" for another. Aside from these though, the remainder are mostly poor quality recordings of studio jams and half-finished songs. There are also the seeds of some future songs, most notably a version of "In The Black Room" which later saw life on Peter Hammill's "Chameleon In The Shadow Of Night" album. Read More: Rating:  - A side of Van Der Graaf that you may not have heard beforeThis album is not for the faint hearted Van Der Graaf fans, it shows them at the Motorhead rather than the Genesis end of their spectrum. The album consists of a series of studio out takes with none of the over production that sapped the energy of a lot of the progressive bands of the period. What is left is the raw power that was fighting to get through in Godbluff and Still Life. Some of the recordings are not very clear, but what shines through is the bands real commitment to what they were doing. The Liquidator burns everything before it and demonstrates how Peter Hammill got from Van Der Graaf to songs like Nadir's Big Chance.
