The stagesets of this movie are incredible and utterly unique; essential for anyone who wants to see how art deco is best used in a large space. (It crosses your mind that all the pieces may have been looted - they are certainly 'decadent', underlining the hypocrisy of the lead characters.) Aside from being absolutely rank in places, it's cinematically very good. The performances of the four middle-aged harlots are superb and the timing of the death of the pianist is fantastically calculated. Make no mistakes, if any film has the ability to transform you into a gibbering, crying mess, it's this one.
Not for the Faint-Hearted? You'd better believe it.
And thus, it's hard to really "recommend" this film ... Read More:
