Although at first glance this luxuriously appointed box-set appears to retread old ground, John Hillarby, the compiler, has really pulled out the stops and unearthed some real gems here. Discs 3 and 4 are all unreleased live versions but the real nuggets are the unreleased studio songs dotted about on discs 1 and 2. How John Martyn or his record label could have left the sublime "In The Evening" off Solid Air is a mystery beyond mortal comprehension. I would go so far as to say that this box would be worth it just for that one song. Hear it and weep.

I know it's good. What prevents me from buying it is 2 things. 1)The already issued material, great for the not already committed fan,but not so good for us long time collecters. 2)The packaging--it looks like a simple "clamshell" box is out of the question nowadays,in an attempt to charge more for the item they all seem to come in odd sized "books" or (I hate these)"longboxes",LP sized boxes, and every gimmicky variety the ad-men can envisage.Much rather I had been allowed to buy the previously unreleased live material as a seperate item,in a cheap jewel box,or better yet,a paper sleeved set, making for easier storage, and getting the stuff I wanted, without the addition of lots of repeats. Is common sense(rather ... This is a truly iconic album which is a landmark in the journey of John Martyn's remarkable career. `Ain't No Saint' is not a retrospective catalogue of past tracks simply cut and pasted under a new title. Far from it. John Hillarby has thoughtfully and sensitively brought together songs from each of Johns Martyn's 22 studio albums, but most significantly many familiar tracks (many of them live) offer the listener new depths of emotion, enjoyment and additional dimensions as they been previously unreleased.
Whether you are a being introduced to John Martyn for the first time or are a long and dedicated fan, this album is an essential purchase. Don't be put off by the price, `Ain't No Saint' is worth every penny, and much much more.
