I do really like a lot of the classic Beach Boys stuff but I have always felt that they and Brain Wilson in his solo work are a bit disposable. To be honest I don't see what all the fuss is about. The close harmony vocals, like other American bands that followed: The Byrds, The Eagles etc, become cloying after a short time.
I have given this 4 stars because in terms of his greater body of work this measures up pretty well and if you like his previous work then you will certainly not be disappointed with this but it is all a bit Californian for me.

On first play this sounded mighty fine- vocals generally better that any other solo album, production free from contemporary influence. Brian hasn't reinvented the wheel but he has added to his cannon of great work and in time this will be highly regarded by afficianados - here in the UK if not in the USA - twas ever thus. Even though it's stereo the extra speakers came alive aa the sound reverberated. This CD deserves a standing ovation at the end. It is "proper" album length - around ... Read More:

It's inconceivable that this guy once again has delivered one more album that belong to music history of humanity. Listen and enjoy!

This will prove to be a favourite of Brian Wilson's solo albums, with some memorable tracks that will become standards. The writing duties are shared in the main with Scott Bennett, a long-standing member of Brian's touring lineup. With Van Dyke Parks providing lyrics and some narrative sections, you'd think the combination couldn't fail to achieve 5 stars, but surely there could have been just a little more content? At a mere 38 minutes, this offering will leave you wanting more.

This is the most cohesive piece of work Brian Wilson has produced and I include the overrated Pet Sounds and Smile in that statement. Lovely musical arrangements, in the most great songs and the stunning epic "Midnights another day",as good a song as "God only knows", need I say more?
