Bach: St John Passionfrom: Red Seal Release Date June 01, 1998 This is a very good recording made in 1975/76 by the famous Thomanerchor (St. Thomas Church Choir) in Leipzig and impressive soloists, all of whom are clear-toned and precise. The conducting by Hans-Joachim Rotzsch, who used to be a leading tenor of his generation in former East Germany, is incisive. The instrumental accompaniment by members of the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra on modern instruments is excellent. There is something timeless about this performance. There is a complete lack of artifice in the style. The tempi are generally appropriate (to this reviewer's ear) - neither too slow and ponderous as was often the case in the 1950s-1960s nor too fast and jerky as is fashionable in the "period performance" today.
