It's always deeply unsettling how any Throbbing Gristle album manages to be futuristic yet somehow so grubby and nasty: a feeling that the times aren't just going to be a-changing but are going to be a-mangled and a-inappropriately touched along the way. That aside, I can't listen to 20 Jazz Funk Greats without also feeling a real sense of The New. A feeling that something strange and alien had plopped itself into the world and was now residing in the hands of angry little misanthropes like Genesis P-Orridge. Like fellow synth pioneers Devo, Kraftwerk and Suicide before them, TG had little to no idea what would follow in their wake.
