Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Deadly Deicide
This is just about as good as death metal can ever get (short of Napalm Death or Cannibal Corpse), the lyrics are suprisingly clear for a death metal album, this also means that they are catchy(only to a certain extent) and also you remember just small parts of songs, you remember one line that is really catchy and end up listening to and liking the whole album.
The songs will at first sound slightly samey, there will be no obvious differences but once you get into the music you see diferences as clearly as ever.
The songs have all have their own tempo and theme, however the theme throughout the album as with all Deicide is a clear and obvious pissed off at God feeling.
This is an album that is the sound of a band at the peak of their career, this is the last truely excellent album they produced until 2004.
Enjoy!

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Deicides masterpiece
Put simply, Serpents of the Light is Deicide's masterpiece, eclipsing Once Upon the Cross as the bands best album. Fantastically infectious guitar riffs and vocal rhythms, a great sense of dynamics and song construction, aggressive playing and hate-filled vocals, and the best lyrics of the bands career. Not one dud song, Serpents of the Light finds Deicide at the peak of their powers, midpoint between their earlier raw death metal sound and the polished professionalism of Insineratehymn. Utterly essential for all death metal fans.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Possibly their finest
'Serpents of the light' is almost punky in approach, each track, short, snappy, and catchy as hell.
No fillers here, and 'Bastard of Christ' has got to be their finest track, barr none. Highly recommended.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Progression
If there to be a album from Deicide that could be possibly be accused of being commercial, then it is this. But in my opinion, it is just Deicide merely exploring different routes of their music, and hats off to them for that. Some of the leads are (dare I whisper) quite melodic, but yet still retain their brutal, unrelentless assault on your eardrums. Brilliant. The opening title track sets the scene perfectly with the (mandatory) harsh vocals and lightning fast music with the typical anti-Christian lyrics. Tracks 2 to 4 follow in a similar manner, each being excellent tracks. 'Blame It On God' being about Glen Benton (lyricist) losing his best friend. Track 5, 'I Am No One' slows down, but is still worth a few listens to used to. 'Slave To The Cross' picks up where track 4 'This Is Hell We're In' left off. 'Creatures Of Habit' has a certain matured aura about it, as if Benton has grown wiser as he's aged. 'Believe The Lie' starts off slowly, but then kick starts with some faster vocals giving this song a hefty punch. 'The Truth Above' is about aliens exposing God's lies and has some excellent music to give it a really good sci-fi feel. To finish off, 'Father Baker's' gives a really brutal combination of slow and fast vocals and the lyrics are quite interesting as well. I would recommend this album to anyone who wants to start listening to Deicide, or extreme metal in general.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - An intellectual mass of noise.
Deicide have once again made a perfect album. "Father Baker's" is divine, and "Bastard of Christ" is another attempt at the shock-tactics this band is famous for. "Serpents of the Light" is an interesting yet superb offering, and as an opening track, really sets the mood. With the stunning "Believe the Lie" in the middle, this is perfect Death Metal!
