Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - legendary brutal death metal
Suffocation's debut album Effigy of the Forgotten is rightly regarded as one of the all-time classics of brutal death metal. With this release Suffocation really took death metal to a new extreme, and alongside the likes of early Cannibal Corpse and Malevolent Creation defined a new brutality to the genre. This is so unrelentingly brutal that first time listeners may not initially appreciate the quality of the riffs and vocal / drum rhythms on display, but give this a few spins and all will become clear. Scott Burns gives the album a great meaty production (something that the band sorely missed on their disappointing follow-up album Breeding the Spawn) and the bands tight playing is leagues ahead of that of their debut mini-album Human Waste. A true genre classic, if you like full-on brutal death metal then this album is simply essential.

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - Fun! But c'mon it's getting dated now
Bought this album this year and i have mixed opinions on this album. Prior to buying this album i read a review that said that these were the best death metal band ever and that this album was their best. I have to say that i was dissapointed. First of all the production isn't fantastic. The guitars are very fuzzy and have no real defenition, and neither do the majority of the riffs for that matter. It seems as though they have made the riffs with only one note but chugged at a different speed each time, no joke. However there are the bits when they use more of the guitar to create complicated and insane riffs.
The real good point of this album is the drums which are fantastic. Full of variation and the all important clicky bass drum. Vocal wise this album is very good also, the style on this album is deep, really deep, were not talking wussy nile here where his voice is struggling to go that low we are talking gutteral and nasty. They also have very good vocal arrangements. And the bass....who cares.
So overall this album is decent but dont buy it now. Its very dated.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - A landmark in Death Metal history
If you're a serious death metal fan, chances are you'll already own this album. If not, shame on you because you certainly should. To this day, few bands of the genre can get close to Suffocation in their pomp. The riffs and soloing of twin guitarists Terry Hobbs and Doug Cerrito has to be heard to believed, and as for the vocals of Frank Mullen, with the possible exception of Lord Worm, I don't think anyone has ever been more extreme. Effigy Of The Forgotten is without doubt the high point of Suffocation's career which was always pretty impressive anyway and it is a 24 carat Death Metal classic. If bands like Cannibal Corpse, Morbid Angel or the very excellent Dying Fetus float your boat, you have no excuse for not owning a copy of this cracking album.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Probably the best death metal album ever
This will remain forever in my eyes as Suffocation's finest hour (Yes better then "Pierced From Within). The vocals are tortured, gut wrenching growls, the music is highly technical and relentlessly brutal and this is probably one of the first albums to showcase "beatdowns," utilised predominately by hardcore bands such as Hatebreed, Arkangel, Caliban etc, just see the first track to see where im coming from, anyhow this is simply a must have along with anything by Dying Fetus, Morbid Angel, Nile, Cryptopsy, Death, Internal Bleeding, Deranged, Immolation, you get the picture.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Brutal Death Metal
Legendary brutal aggressive death metal! This early release has influenced other new death metal bands around. If you are into dying fetus, decapitated....etc, don't hesistate, BUY IT NOW!!
