Neil Immelman and composer Joseph Suk melt even the most hard-hearted listener right from the mesmerizing, touchingly nostalgic and yet also quietly heroic, opening notes of this album's first work, "At Noon," of "Summer Impressions"; and the listener isn't left off until this total 73:47 of gorgeous music is, regretably but inevitably, finally over. This is some of the greatest piano music ever composed -- terribly underrated short masterpieces, from a terribly underrated, late-19th, early 20th, century master composer, whose trademarked fragrant nostalgia is simply unique in music, and ultimately timeless, universal while it is also deeply Czech.
Immelman's playing draws no attention to itself as he immerses himself in this exquisite world to an extent I've never heard from any other pianist. Immelman seems to be Suk 100%. What more can one say, except that this pianist is evidently as underrated as is the composer.
The only other item I've thus far gotten from this series is v. 3, which is similarly mesmerizing. I'm dying to get volumes 1 & 4, and any more, including whatever else Niel Immelman records.
