- "Classic" Buddy Rich album
"Big Swing Face" is one of Buddy's more popular albums, and I would certainly describe it as a classic. I first heard Buddy Rich when I was a kid when an older cousin of mine played me some of his LPs. Needless to say, I was mesmerised, and spent the next four decades of my life as a drummer.
This CD version also contains tracks that are not on the original LP release, which I still own. Even today, this recording remains one of my all-time favourite Rich albums. You can really feel the atmosphere of the gig, and the band just groove so well. His music crossed categories, and attracted a huge audience, and even if you're not into jazz, or drumming for that matter, you will love this album.
I was fortunate enough to see the Buddy Rich Big Band on two occasions back in the 80's, and even met the great man at the second gig. He was, and still is, my drumming hero, and I feel honoured to have seen him play live. The guy was a genius. He could play things on a drumkit that were incredible, and leave even today's top Session players (Dave Weckl, Vinnie Colaiuta, etc.), shaking their heads in disbelief.
One of the many highlights on this recording is when Buddy introduces his 12 and a half-year-old daughter Cathy, onto the bandstand to sing "The Beat Goes On". It is here that you start to appreciate how much of an "entertainer" Buddy was, and audiences always loved when he got out front. Often known for his wonderful sense of humour, Buddy could charm any audience with his great wit and warmth of character.
"Big Swing Face" is a fantastic album. If I had to choose just one Buddy Rich CD that everyone should buy, this would be the one. You will be tapping your feet throughout this recording, and the music and feel of this recording just gets to you. This band is hot man! Buddy could swing like no other.

and by the best i mean, THE best. This has got to be some of the most up beat, swining and tasteful big band work in history. This is renowned as one of the best CDs of buddy and his big band, and here they are on top form. Buddy's drumming is superb, as are the rest of his band, with everyone stepping into the spotlight at one time or another, and none dissapointing.
Buy this, for £4 you've got nothing to lose.

Oh my goodness! Ive just bought this album, chucked it onto tape to put it in the car and it is just amazing. The best music to drive to, the best music to cheer you up, to get you in the mood to party, to dance... this is pure upbeat excellence. Its lively, its superbly played and just sounds great. The drums could be a little higher in the mix but thats a minor point.
I am a drummer and this is my first buddy rich album... it wont be my last.

This is one of Buddy's really famous and most loved records, it has many of the tunes on it that became the bands standards. Tunes like 'Norwegian Wood', 'Love for Sale' and 'Bugle Call Rag' are played and sound superb, with every section of the band really swinging. Buddy swings his band along nicely and has a few breaks here and there but on the whole it is very much a group performance.The album is recorded 'live' at 'The Chez' and the excitment of the evening really comes across, as the crowd show their appreciation after every tune. Buddy's daughter Cathy even sings on this record, she sings 'The Beat Goes On', which was sampled a year or so ago for a dance record, which brought the Buddy Rich Band into every club in the country !! Her rendition is great, considering her age at that time, and this tune gives the album a nice flavour. For all you drummers out there his famous 16th note snare drum fill on 'Love For Sale' is still worth checking out, as is his short solo on'Bugle Call Rag', and again just as a lesson for any drummer who wants to learn how to tastefully support a Big Band, well here it is....School is definetly IN !!
A great addition to any Big Band collector and a must for any serious drummers.
