- GENIUS, totally on its own but not experimental, rather, in its own way, an immaculate conception.
There's a reviewer here who hates the album, saying "Buy 'Safe as Milk' or the bargain buy of 'Clear Spot' and 'The Spotlight Kid'" Traitor! Fool! Safe... and Spotlight... are the captain only on his way to finding himself and at a low ebb respectively. Sure, start with 'Clear Spot'or better still, 'Shiny Beast'sounding truly brilliant with the remaster job this year. (Weird other choices for remastering, such as 'Bluejeans', which was with a pick-up band who couldn't do anything, whom he made his one TV appearance with on Whistle Test, seeming such a let-down given his reputation, due to them.) Even better again though is just to dive in with 'Trout Mask' but then for God's Sake reserve judgement until you've lived with it for a few years. What is the point in ever reviewing when not understanding. I wouldn't dream of reviewing opera, hip hop, techno as I don't understand the music as the haters here don't get Beefheart. A magnificent record. Saying that, in 10 years, the first ten I owned it, I never heard it all the way through at one sitting. Those lyrics gave me so much to think about, I had so much to take away, that a couple of songs each time was perfect thank you. The sound, the way the band play, which is all down to the music Beefheart comes to them with, is absolutely awesome, as if it's another strand of music only explored by them. You would think then that this would be 'experimental', that word which I would say is for bands courageously attempting to push boundaries but only half seeing their goal, not even knowing really what it is, let alone reaching it. 'Trout Mask' though is never hit or miss. Every single song hits its mark, which must then be due to this being a musical conception normal to Beefheart, while impossibly out of reach to the rest. It's also not 'experimental'in that this would often mean not tuneful. Trout Mask is superbly tuneful. Still, this album needs to be lived with for many years for many people including myself but if you admire music that pushes the boundaries, look no further as this goes further, not pushing or breaking (unfortunately leaving them intact as no-one could follow), but rather being an island unto itself outside of everything else.

There is nothing else like this album. The other reviewers describe it well (apart from the guy who dismissed the band as 'stoners').
If I really like something the first time I hear it, I tend to tire of it. If it takes a few listens before I start to get into it, and then it grows on me - then I tend to like it long term.
I first heard Trout Mask in 1972. It became my favourite album and has remained so ever since. If you enjoy listening to complex music, give this a try.

I still cannot work out why it is that this music works so well. If you look at most of the individual parts separately you wouldn't give this album the time of day. Put them all together and somehow you have one of the most remarkable albums ever recorded.
It is probably worth noting that it is one of those pieces that take more than one listening, but once you are in tune with it there is no turning back. I'm still thinking it over, but this might just now be my favourite album of all time.
Rating: - Unmatched genius.
Those who cannot understand this superlative piece of genius simply do not deserve to. Their confusion and anger can never match one tenth of the excitement, happiness and joy this album has given to millions who 'get' it.

during the 60's the drug fuelled revolution brought about numerous classic albums, from The Beatle's "Sgt. Pepper's..." to Cream's "Disreali Gears" to Bob Dylan's "Highway 61 Revisited", and from the reviews i have read about Captin Beefheart "Trout Mask Replica" should be up there. But, to put it frankly, this is horrific. The music (if it can be called that) is not in time and there is about 12 different tunes going on at once (which many of my fellow reveiwers site as a good point!). You'll catch a quick glimps of a tune but this is quickly crushed by the Captain's deafening so called singing. Perhapse this terrible concuction would be forgiven if the lyrics were as poetic as people had told me. However they are terrible, i mean they make no sence. Even Dylan at his most serreal made sence or at least sounded nice. These lyrics however are terrible. I mean what is a "highhat beaver moustached man". It is not artistic. In the slightest. This is not a band...it's a bunch of stoners with too much spare time, and now far too much money. There is one good track however. "Veteran's Day Poppy" turns into something memorable (this is after the Captain shuts the hell up of course) and the rest of the apauling album is almost worth the 2 minuet segment of good music. The production throughout is awful. There is not enough synonyms for the word bad in the english language to describe the horiffic atrocity that is this album.
This album is very difficult to listen to and is definately a product of it's time that should be overlooked by anyone who likes music or wishes to keep the fallacy that all music from the 60's is good.
